Tony Neptune continues the story of Yuri Gagarin, the fabled cosmonaut and explorer who tragically died in 1961. In the second of these odes to Gagarin we join our Hero at a point of catastrophe on the planet of Toierra. Two pieces of original music have been to accompany the painting on the cover as part of a wider soundtrack to complement the narrative of this remarkable yet troubled man. An insert detailing the story will supplement the narrative of each issue.

Many Millenia ago the Gods, the twelve spirit like creatures that fled from the void, changed the city of Toierra and the planet itself forever. It started with the last of the Twelve, Rem Katar, who made this planet, he made this city. In jealousy and spite the other Eleven sought to control his creation. A secret plan was set in motion to command the most influential Toierrans, who were at this point a thriving civilisation in their own right. They were craftsmen, thinkers, artists and warriors, but like all sentient beings they held a resolution to survive and were thus corruptible.

Gifts of power, riches and technology were given to the most prominent Toierrans, gifts that came with a caveat of fealty to the Eleven. Over time the wealthy in the city, with help from the Gods, augmented their bodies using cybernetics giving them a faster more agile minds as reward for tampering with their anatomy. From the outset, their new metal extremities scraped together with sharp ringing as they moved, leading the poor to call them, under their breaths, the Clinks.

The little Toierrans, those left with the unbeknown gifts of a mind that is pure and untampered with, were now a slave class confined to squalor at the base of the city. They were the metal workers, the builders and the disposal staff. They worked the forges night and day, they cleaned the city and they did so without complaint or the strength to fight back.

When the Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin landed on the planet many millennia after, he finds a city on the brink of upheaval. Enrolled in the Resistance Gagarin tours the streets with other Toierrans reeking petty havoc on the Clinks. Yuri is captured by a unit of patrolling guardsmen and dragged through the streets. Up step after step they cart him, never stopping, until whispers are heard. He hears the great creaking of enormous doors. He finds himself in a long and richly decorated gallery room bathed in light from a great glass ceiling. There is shouting, laughter and the general hubbub of a room in session. When curious eyes move towards Yuri the talk ceases and as the doors close behind him and the guards drag him forward he has never felt so alone..

In the third of these odes to Gagarin we join our Hero after escaping the city of Toierra. Drawn by a mysterious pull he tries to find help and allies to bring down the Clinks and save his friends. Four pieces of original music have been to accompany the painting on the cover as part of a wider soundtrack to complement the narrative of this remarkable yet troubled man. Below a great canopy of trees a light rustling can be heard, the snapping of twigs and two voices muffled by the foliage. Yuri and Lyaru’s argument though loud when close by seemed to fragment into the gloom like a puff of smoke. The two beings had walked for hours, they were exhausted, hungry covered in scratches and bites and both needed a well deserved break from their companion. 

Yuri succumbing to hunger leaves Lyaru after setting up camp to look for sustenance. The trees though are an unforgiving scene for our weary adventurer and within minutes Yuri is blundering through the undergrowth lost and utterly alone. For hours he moves through the trees, the eyes of the forest upon him, the noises of snapping branches made by Yuri's feet answered by unfamiliar cries of animals and worse that lay in the undergrowth. Finally Yuri sees a patch of light ahead, a clearing and the unmistakable sound of running water.

In the clearing’s centre an empty dome sits on a weathered stone plinth and Yuri approaches with trepidation. The sounds of the forrest that have been with the adventurer for the past how ever many hours have gone, eaten by the impenetrable surrounding of vegetation save for the trickle of flowing water from the forrest pool. When he reaches out to touch the ancient structure it’s contents morph from nothingness into the city of Toierra, a city at war. Two great ships hover malevolently over the city intimidating the populace into submission. With another look the image fades to be replaced by the vision of a woman alone in a room, her head in her hands, the bed she’s sat on gently bowed as she rocks backwards and forwards her shadow dancing behind her from the light cast by a singular oil lamp on a desk. Yuri’s wife suddenly looks up suddenly and she starts at the sight of him the barrier of space and time suddenly an irrelevancy as their eyes meet through the dome. Then a voice out of the darkness makes Yuri jump and removes him from his revery and memories of a life that no longer belongs to him. The image disappears and Yuri turns slowly to see two creatures watching him from the trees.

On the 12th of April 1961, Yuri Gagarin was launched into orbit for the first and - so they tell us - the last time. Upon returning to Earth, Yuri became a global hero, travelling the world to tell of his adventure.
Secretly, he was plagued by strange hallucinations and a persistent glow around his vision; a cornucopia of colour in a constant corona. In 1964 - following a silent coup by Leonid Brezhnev - Yuri was banned from embarking on further manned missions into space. At first fearing madness, the cosmonaut came to see these apparitions as a signal, an invitation, a welcoming beacon from a distant lighthouse blinking across the cosmic void.

On the 27th of March 1968, aided by trusted friends within the space program, Yuri Gagarin swapped places with another cosmonaut on a secret test flight and was once more blasted into outer space. Knocked unconscious by the extreme velocity of his experimental craft, Yuri awoke a mere 15 minutes later in view not of the rapidly shrinking Earth, but an entirely alien vista; he was elsewhere...
