Here’s the story: it was a rainy day in Los Angeles, the first since May 2024 and the first one to put out the wildfires. I was in KTown at the time, in a beautiful apartment on Serrano Ave—super minimalist, spacious, and tastefully decorated.

The acoustics in the main room were amazing, and I thought it was the perfect place and the perfect weather to compose some music.

I set out to find a small acoustic guitar for that, something not too expensive that I could even leave in LA for when I come back. I went to Guitar Center—there were a lot of options, including a super cool ’90s Washburn, but I hesitated and left. I went through 3 or 4 second-hand stores like that in LA, but in the end, I turned to Craigslist/Facebook Marketplace.

I found this little Yamaha FG-180 Red Label, made in Korea. It was absolutely perfect because I love Elliott Smith, and I was actually listening to his music at that moment. I thought, “This is the sound I want.” The guy selling it said it had belonged to Peggy Oki, a member of the Z-Boys, the legendary Los Angeles skaters.

Long story short: I told the guy I’d take the guitar. It was in Ventura, at least an hour from LA. I drove there and back in the morning—it took up my whole morning. I withdrew some cash, went to the guy’s place, and his apartment was a complete mess—guitars, boxes, surfboards everywhere. I asked him, “Do you surf?” and he replied, “What else is there to do around here?”

I put the guitar in the trunk, drove back to LA a little too fast, dropped the guitar off at the apartment, and went on with my day.

That night, I got back around 10:30 PM, picked up the guitar, put a capo on, and instantly found a little riff I thought was cool. I had bought a small Shure USB mic so I could record directly onto my computer without an audio interface. I recorded the riff in one take, found a vocal sample that fit perfectly, sliced it up to replay it. Did the same with the drums to get a bit of a glitchy feel, and the bass too. By midnight, the track was already taking shape, so I went to bed.

The next day, I listened to it 2 or 3 times in the car and thought, “It’s actually great just like this.” I decided I’d make more short tracks like this—little snippets of about a minute—and completely free myself from the idea that I had to make full tracks with all the usual overthinking.

I posted a photo of the guitar in my story and tagged Peggy, and she sent me a personal message telling me the story of the guitar and saying she was happy it had found a new home.

That day was a 10/10.

B18, c’est pas un blaze sorti d’un délire de label, c’est le code du quartier, le 18e, la tess de Barbès, où tout a commencé. Ces gars-là ont grandi là, traîné là, charbonné là. Ils ont vu les murs changer, les rideaux de fer s’ouvrir, les anciens disparaître et les petits prendre le relais.

“Barbès BB”, c’est pas juste un son. C’est un hommage, un pavé musical dans la rue. C’est les voix de ceux qu’on n’entend pas assez, les rires en terrasse, les clashs de palier, les sons de scooters et les pas sur le bitume. C’est la vibe d’un Paris brut, plein d’amour et de rage, loin des clichés de cartes postales.

Entre trap chaude, ambiance quartier, et phrases qui claquent comme des serrures, B18 livre une déclaration d’amour à leur coin, à leur monde. Avec un style entre Jul, SCH et Renoir, mais toujours authentique, à leur sauce.

Barbès, c’est pas une destination. C’est une identité.
