DEJA VU

The release of the 'As Above So Below' EP further cemented You Man's growing reputation for creating deep club tracks that embrace everything from the deepest techno and warehouse rave to global sounds and disco vibes that take the listener to the very reaches of consciousness and beyond.  When the French duo invited Moderna to remix one of the tracks she immediately picked 'Third Eye', saying she "chose the track because she connected with the vocals and felt she could use them in a great way in the remix". After roadtesting the remix on more than one occasion, we can all agree Moderna absolutely nailed it. The remix is a proven -hypnotic- dancefloor heater.

 Like other duos, such as Daft Punk or The Chemical Brothers, Tepat Huleux and Giac Di Falco have been inseparable since they first met at their Calais high school in 1996, bonding over trips across the Belgian border to continue their education at Ghent's legendary warehouse parties. Now under the identity You Man, all their years of learning have enabled the two producers to find their own unique sound which they call "Club Wave", a heady mix of electro club, new wave melodies and dark, deviant and hypnotic disco grooves.

One of the compilations of 2023 Curses' Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX saw the Berlin-based Musician and DJ explore the darker side of club music. Bringing together 49 tracks that joined the dots between early industrial pioneers, EBM legends and post-punk bands with some of the most exciting artists around today this was a celebration of the kind of raw electronic music best performed live in smoke filled clubs.

One might suspect that between this and the first equally acclaimed, and substantial, Next Wave Acid Punx album clubland's gothic vaults might be eerily empty. But, just as every good live act knows, you should hold something special back for an encore, and so Curses is back with Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX - Secret Cuts, 11 bonus tracks that all deserve their own moment in the strobe light.

"Curating Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX was a big puzzle," explains Curses. "Figuring out how to fit all these tracks across 6 different 12"s required a lot of calculations and, to be quite frank, I was never that great at maths. Unfortunately this meant we had to cut some real heaters off of DEUX. But Eskimo and I decided that we couldn't let these gems go to dust. I've been DJing them loads in my sets, so it was only fair to share them with y’all to DJ and rage to yourselves. So, here it is... the final blast of bonus tracks for Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX: Secret Cuts."

Featuring the likes of Ghost Cop, Paresse, Nuovo Testamento, You Man, plus a new Curses track and Redux version, Secret Cuts is a worthy companion piece, packed full of the kind of jagged synths, jackhammer kickdrums, heavily gated snares and punk attitude that saw Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX named a BBC 6 Music compilation of the week, score a perfect 10 from Faze Mag and go straight in the record bag of every DJ that appreciates the darker things in life.

Having previously taken a razor to J.W.B. Hits The Beat's Body On Body track on Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX, Curses now turns his attention to the group’s House Fatale. Originally released in 1988, House Fatale is a classic example of just how fast electronic music was evolving back then, bringing together elements of Electro, Freestyle, House and more amongst a riot of samples, all elements Curses retains whilst nudging the tempo and giving the track a harder edge.

“I’d long been a fan of Corine’s soft vocals and disco jams, so I was delighted when she followed me back on Instagram,” Andrew explains. “We finally met in Madrid when Corine was performing there and we quickly cemented the idea of working together."

The pair have turned their hand to a faithful, if wonderfully pumped up, cover of Lama’s 1983 Italo classic Love On The Rocks. Corine’s breathy vocals find the perfect foil in Andrew’s analogue machines as they deliver a heady mix of oiled up arpeggios, disco beats and chichi melodies that sparkle like a well-polished mirrorball.
