DJ Mag (2023): "Hojo smashes headlong into Berlin label SPE:C with a pummelling techno cut featuring grime royalty. Novelist. '16 O's' came about when Hojo was working on a flip of the Lewisham MC's 2015 classic, '1 Sec', in a Dalston studio, while - unbeknownst to him - Nov was working next door. When the rapper heard the rework, he jumped in the booth to record a relentless spray of original bars, which Hojo reworked into a breaksy 4/4 slammer, sparingly overlaid with a dubstep top bass”.

For EYX020 New York City-based artist No Sir returns with a three-tracker titled Radial Burn, set to be released on November 22, 2024, via Turin's forward-thinking label Early Reflex. Known for pushing the boundaries of rhythmic and atmospheric experimentation, No Sir delivers a project that deepens their exploration of the tension between double and half-time beats, layering sinuous percussion with moments of intense noise and breath.
In Radial Burn, No Sir seeks to explore how subtle shifts in rhythmic stress can alter the listener's physical response to the music. Through intricate, often elusive patterns, the EP finds unique spaces within the beat, producing a heady blend of club energy and introspective sound design.
The title track “Radial Burn” sets the tone for the EP with relentless, driving percussion that continually shifts between double and half-time, pulling the listener into a dynamic, almost vertiginous space. The push-pull effect of rhythmic stress brings both tension and release, with each percussive layer adding depth to the track's intensity.
“Soft Tissue” follows next like a sonic exploration of fragility and pressure. Fusing erratic, snapping rhythms with expansive atmospheric textures, this track finds moments of air within the chaos. It evokes a tactile, bodily experience—like sound massaging against skin, sometimes delicately, sometimes forcefully.
Closing the EP, “Layer 03” draws from Drum 'n Bass, UK Garage, and Dubstep, blending heavy basslines and syncopated beats with a modern edge. It weaves together intricate grooves and deep bass, offering a fresh take on bass-infused and underground sounds.

“In working on this EP, I was drawn to the push and pull between double and half-time, finding pockets of air and atmosphere amidst layers of sinuous percussion and noise. By shifting the stress of the beat within each track, I aimed to explore how subtle changes in rhythmic emphasis can impact the human body.”

The tracks are born from the concept of being sonically coerced into movement, distilled down to the essential elements of rhythm; bass, vocals and drums. Having studied the phenomenon of rhythm based primarily on the writings of Tiger C. Roholt, Chungo explores the idea of groove as the puppeteer and the listener the puppet (Pupazzo in Italian). With the elements perfectly balanced, they lock into the internal metronome of the listener, turning motion into a necessity.
