Nehza Records shares its fifth release, False Nostalgia by Neida on 24th February Following 2021's Slowing, French artist Neida returns to RONI's label with a 4-track EP ‘False Nostalgia’ will be available digitally for pre-order on February 3rd, and released February 24th.

 As the title suggests, "False Nostalgia" is an ode to the past. In this case, it's the heady days of the 90’s rave scene.
Musically, those in the same generation as Neida long for this era. Realistically, they didn't experience it firsthand, hence the use of "false" in the title. Paying homage to a simpler time when climate change was nothing but a rumour, the track thumps with chunky drums and a cartoonish synthline, evoking ecstatic energy and feelings of enchantment — the kind you can only feel at a hedonistic rave. "I see this piece as an invitation to live in the present," says Neida. "And to take into account the issues and problems of today and tomorrow."

As the siren’s song echoes out of systems worldwide, perhaps we are (re)turning to the liquid age of dance; with natural ephemera such as moss, sentiments for ecology such as swamps, and mercurial aspects of water all absorbing the aesthetic forefront. A return to nature, a deep dive under the lily pads. Here Marijn S with her debut EP guides our plunge, a trip previously taken via her podcasts on Kulture Lab, where you can also find her previously released music.

Whispers from the ethereal plane drift around the headspace, a rumble in the distance of sound traversing the water, voices to guide and to keep you from floating too far from the line. Audio hallucinations are aplenty when submerged, a serenity of space, yet distant growls assure that peace is not always 2 be found. The melancholia within the daydream, the pang of loss caught in reflections, internal and from the water, with the lily pads floating above as a guiding entity, an anchor, something to hold. Under the lily pads we rumble.

On the flip everyone’s fav casual breaks n rave hooligan Luca Lozano asks the recurring thought within dance music, a question we quest, yet rarely want the answer. Abstraction via squeaks and tweaks, you better bop your bleepin’ head to this 1.

‘Leave A Message’ leaves the tranquil waters disturbed and rippling to the outer edges, providing jumps for the lily pads to ride on the incoming tide, with the ebb and flow making way for a storm surge. Aka big beats are the best, a notion the directly honest final track ‘Made (Drums)’ follows, bringing a twisted jack attack logic to a deranged assembly of samples, a manic orchestra of tumbling drums who have conspired to freak out, albeit with cute bubbles underneath to revel in the allure of sonic mania.

Dublin born and raised DJ & producer DART has been at the forefront of Irish electronic music for years, first establishing himself as a resident at Dublin's legendary Hangar club, before winning AVA’s coveted emerging producer program in 2018. Since then it’s been a wild ride, playing in venues from Glasgow’s Sub Club to the Warehouse Project, while stopping off at venues like Index to play a legendary b2b with Skream, a connection made the previous year having remixed his track ‘Sad Days’ on IFEEL.

Some of DART's most notable influences were passed down from his parents, both of which were immersed in Dublin’s ‘90s rave scene, where the sounds of trance and house could be heard across the city's evolving and ever-changing landscape. His love for progressive sounds has continued to be channeled through his work today and in DART’s own words sits “somewhere in between ‘90s progressive house, old school trance and modern techno.”

His latest release on New York mainstay HOMAGE is a nod to both his past and current relationship with dance music, using elements that span techno, progressive trance & house; continuing to be influenced by the records passed down by his parents.‘Get up’ kicks things off and could be likened to the energy-tingling productions of modern house producers like Sweely, coupled with a vocal sample and breakdown that wouldn’t sound out of place in a classic trance record. ‘Juice’ twists the template further, with squelching acid sounds and dynamic percussion leading the charge. ‘Juice’ is also remixed by New Zealand’s Eden Burns, who turns in an emotional, introspective rendition as we make our way through peaks and valleys with endless curiosity.

Within the transformations of their meticulous processes, London duo Kassian become a vessel for alchemy: filtering and distilling scores of stems, samples and layers until something richer and more complex than the sum of its parts emerges. Uncomfortable in any solitary genre, and at the midpoint of somewhere unexpected and uncharted, the pair describe their sound as “almost techno.”

Since their debut release in 2018, Kassian have drifted leftwards into heavier, more abstract territory, harnessing their individual skills for working in the small pockets and painting the whole cloth of the canvas. In their first outing for !K7, Phase Two EP, the Roland System 1 synth is the throughline as they painstakingly piece together sketches, turning high hats into kick drums, capturing the resonance of percussion and drift further into each other’s heavy-hitting sonic realms.

“X-303” recontextualises the sci-fi inspiration of its name, forging a new style of interstellar acid. A driving kick drum holds steady through a track which oscillates between contrasts: from eerie, suspenseful pads and distorted string sounds, to a minimalistic groove accented with double-time drums and mechanistic pulses. “Tabla” reduces a distinct latin rhythm down to its essence, and is propelled by a thick and distended bass loop. Its hypnotic groove combines the human and the virtual with a glitching vocal sample and the juddering of strummed guitar strings, highlighted by the percussive hits of its namesake instrument.

The pair characterise “Prelude” as “a Frankenstein kind of monster.” Constructed around a radio sample of a legend of the scene, it is a sleek and incremental gradation of shades, with micro layers from their palette of sounds rising and falling, blending and twisting with no obvious lead or bass. Repurposing the same drums as “X-303”, the EP’s final track “Patterns” was inspired by Kassian’s earliest incarnations of live performances, and it unashamedly captures the peaks of communal moments, rounding out the EP with an epic take on deep and techy house.

At last, we get doused from the source; four priors of reissued gems and newer beauts now land us at the quintus maximus: the inaugural Spray on Spray. It’s large and in charge, as we pull back the velvety curtain to reaffirm the exquisite curator is just-as-exquisite a melody maker. OT Rails adjusts the prog antenna to broadcast 3 anthems from the great big dance satellite in the sky, including a collaboration with French cuties Baraka. You’ve had your trad, now dance!

The title track struts along its psychedelic catwalk with a sexy house swagger, unlocking a wobbly stack of pineal-tickling melodies en route. The angels soon sing in positiva harmony, before the piano-lude calls for a tight embrace with those closest to you on the dancefloor. Raise those hands aloft, you know what’s coming; that hard house’d snare roll soon erupts and, before you know it, you’re soaring like the white dove you are. Why does it feel so good?

Spray then switches channel to Ceathair, coaxing the prog spirit from the motherland as the psilocybinised breaks wisp through the undergrowth. The vibe is bouncy, as the diva croons and bassline sings, before the vista opens and the sprayed piper summons you home. Open that third eye, súil eile.
Our swan song is reserved for Baraka and Spray, conjoining their tech trance powers on Think Of Me. The trio up the pace for the grand finale, rolling the tight groove from the off while igniting its hybridised trance rump with hypnotic fervour. The friendly mantra floats heavenly above throughout, absorbing you in a semi-lucid ecstatic state. It’s a whirlwind of dancefloor energy from beginning to end, and Spray wouldn’t have it any other way.
