This is Jan Seiden playing "Highland Heather" one of her original and copyrighted pieces at my studio for the Audio Technica AT4080 Blumlein Project. 

This is a very special flute. Made by Dana Ross of Falcon Flutes, it is a double chamber, double octave Em native american style flute. All the better to challenge this pair of Audio Technica AT4080 ribbon microphones. 

The mics were fed to GML preamps, an RMA ADI-8 DS A/D converter and then to Pro Tools. Recording and mixing we done at 24-bit, 44.1 kHz. A small amount of EQ was used. Two separate stereo reverbs were used.

This is actor Molly Moores (http://www.mollymoores.com) who does everything from Shakespeare to Roller Derby (and VO). Notice the smooth top and thick chest tones, yet it still cuts through. No EQ, no compression, no nothing. Just straight into Protools and straight out. No editing on this track, no breaths taken out. This is just the raw file.

The TLM103 is a little picky about which preamps it likes. Here it is going into the Greg Hanks BA-60. I'm playing my 1971 D28S Martin.

These are a series of specially-written legal FCC sign-off announcements for WAYE AM - Baltimore, Maryland. They were used in the early 1970s.

Back in the 1980s, in US radio, I worked at 98 Rock, a 50,000 watt FM station in Baltimore, MD. I was on the air, the production director and operations manager. One of my jobs was to create promo spots for the station.

Back then, I was guided by Firesign Theater, The Conception Corporation, Cheech and Chong and The Radio Ranch. I think you can hear a bit of that in this spot promoting 98 Rock T-shirts. The theory was that a little bit of entertainment helped get the message across and stopped people from tuning out. 

I wrote and produced the promo. I was Dr. Brains and one of the kids. Brian MacDonald was The Announcer and the other kid.

This is an "air check" from around 1985, when I did mid days at 98 Rock in Baltimore. Every time the mic was turned on, the recorder started. The recorder recorded our voices so we could find out how good (or bad) we sounded on any given day after we got off the air. I think this was an average day for me, but what do I know. 

It's sort of fun to hear the titles of the songs we were playing back then and the promotions we were running.  Even little bits of Lopez and commercials.

Down a dark and muddy two lane road off of Rt 198, was WLMD AM; a 1kW AM radio station that, in 1976, was playing progressive country music under the direction of Bob Showacre. Bob and I grew up together in Annapolis, about 40 minutes from Laurel. The main air studio, shown here, was nothing special. We did, however, play music that other stations in the Washington DC market didn't play. We each had theme songs to begin our shows. This one is one that I created and played all the parts. That's my D28s Martin.

This track combines my "Bliss" soundtrack and my reading of Robert Peng's teaching of this chant. 

The track opens with the Chakra soundtrack and you will hear six beats in rhythm, just before you hear me begin the chant. There is a chime heard between the 35th and 36th repetitions, so you know to stop after one more.

This track consists of seven spans of notes and includes at least five octaves of sound from our musical system. It moves in accordance with the Chakra system. Listening to it should relax the listener and enable healing.

The kick is part of a ten year old Peavey International Series II set. The kick is a 22" x 14" 9-ply basswood drum. As I watched them load it in, I was skeptical. After we tracked the first song I was impressed. The 15 dB pad you see was put on before I gained down my RME ADI-8 DS, because the kick was clipping at first. After gain range adjustment on the RME it all worked very nicely. I was using a GML preamp. What you hearing was EQd a bit. 4-5 dB of gain at 50 Hz and 3 kHz.

This 24-bit, 44.1 kHz stereo mix is of John Seay playing my Martin Grand J-28LSE. There are three mics and a D-Tar under saddle pickup. The two Schoeps CMC641 are left and right. A Neumann U 89i is in the center and the D-Tar is also in the center. You hear me describing the mics and placement as I create the mix.

Thank you to Josh, Shuviel, Esther and Mike who came over to provide some great music to test how well the Audio Technica AT4080 ribbon mics would do in recording in Blumlein Stereo. It took a bit of moving people around to get the right stereo balance, but as this short sample shows, it can be done very well.  More recordings to come!

This piece was recorded in one pass using two Audio Technica AT4080 ribbon mics in Blumlein Array feeding two channels of GML mic pre, an RME ADI-8 DS A/D converter and into Pro Tools 10. No overdubs. I used minimal EQ (a little 1kHz to pop the vocal up), reverb, compression and limiting.

Oh, and it was hugely fun! I'm proud to have these talented guys as good friends and thank them for helping me demonstrate the power of these Audio Technica AT4080 ribbon mics in Blumlein Array.
