This mix was so much fun to put together, and I feel really outlines the common threads through a lot of my favorite aesthetics that make up what I feel is so important to the Chicago scene(s) and its histor(y/ies). One thing I have loved about Chicago since even before I moved here, is the natural sense of this music feeling so earthy, organic, and natural, as well as ethereal, otherworldly, and alien at once. I feel that in many other historic scenes, one end of this dichotomy might take precedence over the other, but only here in Chicago do I get a beautiful sense of balance and simultaneity in this respect. The Fred Anderson selections here follow a familiar “jazz” format in some ways, but the way everyone plays is so unique, so fresh, and so engaging to me.

The tunes and lineup are not credited on these Fred Anderson tapes, but I do wonder, is this one of the earliest recordings we have of Hamid Drake? If my quick google research is accurate, this is the same year Fred Anderson put out his first record “Another Place” with Hamid on drums at age 23. There’s a drum beat about a minute and a half into this first track that I associate with his kind of approach, and I feel it really encapsulates this era and scene in a way. The rubato drumming is so free flowing, so melodic, and so sonically expressive, AND when the time comes to play a groove, the pocket is so perfectly heavy and light. Hamid and a few other notable Chicago drummers have this way of playing a dance groove (whether it’s slow or mid tempo swing, or an R&B backbeat) with such a beautifully heavy open-ended bounce that both anchors the rhythm of the improvisation, while leaving the door open to play things against the beat without it sounding like a conflict of interest. Both grounded and ethereal at once.

One thing I love about the archive is, especially in the Malachi Ritscher collection, the great musicians coming in from out of town to play for Chicagoans. Here I’ve included some solo Derek Bailey music as well as a trio including Ikue Mori, Bill Frisell, and Jim Staley. I think about the ways that that music was recycled through our artistic ecosystems, what people must have thought about it, who would have come out to see it, what it inspired. I love hearing the little fragments of conversations before the music starts in these recordings, it really makes me feel so connected to these people 40 or 50 years ago doing the exact same things that my friends and I do now.
