I wanted this mix to represent the range of emotions you feel when you had that special someone in your life, up until the very end, when they are no longer a part of it anymore.

I want each abg mix to be better than the last so this is the first time my mix has consisted of mostly of my own edits! So hope you guys enjoy and cry lots :')

With everything that's been going on with the murder of George Floyd, I've been able to do a lot of self reflection so I just wanted to say something:

I am very fortunate to have grown up around so many different cultures. My mom immigrated from the Philippines after she graduated college and my dad immigrated from Taiwan at a young age too. With my parents coming from two similar, but very different backgrounds, I grew up being able to see the world through a unique lens. I'm really proud of this Asian part of my identity. The strong family values, gritty work ethic, food, music, and so many other things make me proud to call myself Asian. 

Even though my Asian side is a big part of my life, my identity is still very much affected by my American side. Growing up, a lot of people would ask me if I affiliated with my Filipino or Taiwanese side more. I remember having a lot of difficulty answering this question because I never felt like I truly belonged in either side. Truthfully, I found a lot of refuge as a kid in my American identity.

Growing up in the Bay Area, my American identity was even more specific. My two older brothers grew up during the Hyphy Movement, blasting Mac Dre, Keek Da Sneak, Trunk Boiz and many other Black rappers when they got home from school. Kids in my town (of predominantly Asians) would mimic Black slang and copy fashion popularized by the Black community. For a while, everyone's favorite basketball player would be either Kobe or LeBron, and there would even be kids that wore durags to school. With all of this, it's clear to me now how much my upbringing was influenced by Black culture. And in the wake of everything that has been going on, it's clear that this influence still is a big part of me today. In fact, I made this mix to reflect the music the music that I love listening to and the music I'm sure a lot of you love. Every artist in this mix is Black.

Although the Black community has contributed so much to my life, I now have been thinking about what I myself have done to give back to them.  Frankly, I haven't done anything for them. And quite honestly, I think I'm part of the problem. In general, I feel like Asians (especially East Asian and light-skinned) are put in a different light than different POCs. We are commonly thought of as the model minority, one that other minorities in America should strive to be. As a result, I feel like we don't face the same degree or amount of adversity/struggle that other POCs deal with- especially the Black community. This privilege that we Asians have is something that we have to acknowledge and address. We need to stop teaching racist, anti-Black sentiment into our children and we have to stop looking out for just Asians. This is toxic. We need to do better.

I could keep going on about a whole bunch of things, but I think the first step in all of this is checking your privilege. Acknowledging this privilege, feeling the guilt and shame, and understanding the role you play in the grand scheme of things, are all extremely important. If you haven't done that, please do so! It's never too late to change.
