The lowest time in our lives can appear so impossible to escape that it seems, sometimes, there is only one way out. The pain can take so long to subside, and at times, it feels like you aren't even breathing life anymore. Everyone experiences their own personal rock bottom, but it's making it through life's ups and downs that make us human and make us stronger.

This song represents a small piece of the emotions I felt while going through my own personal lows and fighting my demons a few years back. It was through these times that I learned the beauty and value of life, how easy it is to get caught up on the little things and forget about the bigger picture. I hope this song can show that no matter how hard life seems, you can keep going. You can keep pushing forward. You are still breathing.

'Elastic Heart' - Sia

This upbeat, Latin inspired piece brings out a dancing spirit in the listener as the meter is never constant; changing from 3/8 to 4/8, back and forth between 6/8 and 3/8, and even throwing in a bar of 13/16 to really keep things interesting (see if you can pick it out!). The title, originally intended for a piece much slower and played on the harpsichord, was adopted as a bit of a joke to the piece as it is neither a ballad, nor is it intended to be played on the harpsichord. This is a very fun piece composed specifically for performance as the hands have to dance in crisscrossing octaves up the piano occasionally. Not intended for beginners, this piece requires years of prior training and performance to master, but it is enjoyable nonetheless.

'Ballad Of The Harpsichord'

For this piece, I took three themes I'd created and worked them together into one large piece by weaving some of the motifs throughout such as the flute/piccolo solo in the opening, as well as the piano solo in the following section. With this piece, I attempted to create the feel of cinematic music and the different themes one might hear used throughout a movie, and condensed them together into a short piece.
This piece is not intended for performance as it was composed with the ability to alter volumes of instruments, such as the flute playing over the entire orchestra in its lower register. This is intended as a recorded piece in which audio editing can occur to create effects such as this.
To edit this piece, I worked with a professor in flute and piccolo performance to confirm that the pitch bends and ranges are feasible on the instruments, as well as two professors of composition just to double-check the notation for any accidental errors or flaws.

My personal favourite part of this piece is from 3:58 through 5:28, and the rise and fall of the strings from 8:01 to the close of the piece.

'No Escape'

This coming Fall I plan to attend Berklee college of music to begin studying Film Score Composition. To prepare myself as a composer, I took on the task of getting some practice beforehand to dip a toe into the waters of composing for the film industry. To do this, I muted the Disney short 'Paperman' and composed my own original score to accompany it. The timings and rhythms had to be just right in order to line up every hit point and every bar correctly with the motion picture. Though it proved difficult at times, I found the exercise to be quite enjoyable, and proved to have a great outcome!
Though I dearly wish I could share the short film alongside my work, I understand the restrictions held by copyright law, and do not wish to infringe on the rights of the owners of the animation.
Regardless, I hope that you enjoy my first attempt at composing for a film!

'Paperman (Film Scoring Practice)'

One step at a time we fall in and out of love. 'One Step Before The Fall' is a brief and heavily melodic piece built over an airy drone of strings and woodwinds, created to embody the weightless and fragile feeling of being with that one person, not knowing where your next steps may take you, but living there, in that exact moment - one step before falling in love.
