Train Journey Fragments is a set of miniatures on open, anonymous, barren, forbidding landscapes and impressions. The original version of this piece, written for solo classical guitar in 2009-10, was my first microtonal/sixth-tone piece. In the succeeding years to the present, sixth-tone microtonality has become an integral part of my musical language. I returned to this piece in 2014, arranging it for guitar and small ensemble. Coming back to this piece now a third time (re-editing) is like reconnecting with an old, almost forgotten friend. Certain fragments are musically independent, occupy their own world, while others relate to each other on different levels. Motives and harmonies when they recur are refracted, as if showing themselves through shifting lenses.

Blackwinged Night

For about two years, while I was living in France, most of my creative energies went into an ambitious kind of “opera" for piano and electronics. The section I've made available here is musically based on the spiritual Deep River and incorporates in the electronic part the sounds of hammer blows (from a recording of work songs collected by Harry Oster at the Louisiana State Penitentiary during the late 1950s).

Deep River (excerpt from Beginnings, 2005-2007)​

When I composed Kuksu Dance, I was in a deep state of depression, unlike anything I’ve experienced since. Most of the music I composed in my early to mid-twenties I’ve since abandoned, but this piece has a special kind of sincerity and simplicity. I’ve considered changing the title, as it references a Native American culture I had no knowledge of and no business appropriating, but I’ve decided to leave it maybe as a testament to my wacked out mindset at the time. I imagined this music as a healing rite, for physical, spiritual, and emotional cleansing/renewal, an escape route from suffering. The notated music is minimal. Performers are invited to use the notated score as a springboard to create their own unique orchestrations and sound worlds. I recorded this in Lyon, France ( where I was living at the time) with accordion and cassette tape recordings of AM/FM radio sounds.
