Dead Cells - 06 - Berzerk

This is the seventh episode of Dead Cells, a segment for splatterpictures.net. I am covering Wicked City.

Wicked City is a 1987 standalone OVA directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri who also brought us Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust - two titles that are certainly on the Dead Cells list, alongside Demon City Shinjuku, another one of those that we watched stoned on sugar and Jolt Cola on VHS back in the day. Before I was aware, I was watching his work on Gatachaman, or Battle of the Planets, which it was known in syndication. I urge you to perv his extensive credits online with no doubt you have watched something he’s had a hand in.

Dead Cells - 07 - Wicked City

This is the eighth episode of Dead Cells, a segment for splatterpictures.net. I am covering the anime Deadman Wonderland.

This one is from from Manglobe, who also worked on Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic, and Samurai Champloo. This was a one season, twelve episode anime aired in spring 2011. Right now, you can catch it on Netflix, Funimation and sometimes The Cartoon Network. With 29 kills in the first episode, you can see why I wanted to talk about this one.

Dead Cells - 08 - Deadman Wonderland

Today on Dead Cells we are going to talk about the horror anime “Hell Girl”. A good, though sleepy anthology that deals with revenge and the underworld. 

This is one of the first anime I watched when I first discovered Crunchyroll streaming free the last time I was in college. It comes from Studio Deen who have brought us Pupa, Is This A Zombie?, and other harem, crime, romance and slice-of-life animes. Let me know if there is anything you think I should be watching!

Dead Cells - 09 - Hell Girl

Today on Dead Cells we are going to talk about 'Horror News'. It is a motion comic style anime put out by Next Media Animation in 2014. 

It is a 16 episode short anthology series that is perfect for watching on your mobile device. There are ghosts, vampires, UFOs and loads of other little scary tales all brought to you by the mysterious Horror News paper that is delivered at midnight. Dead Cells - 10 - Horror News

Today on Dead Cells we are going to talk about 'Shiki'. This is a 2010 vampire anime that is long on atmosphere, but makes short work of the gore later in the series.

Dead Cells - 11 - Shiki

Today on Dead Cells we are watching 'Devilman'. Instead of all the mass amounts of Devilman stuff out there, I watched the three popular OVA series, The Birth, Demon Bird, and Apocalypse.

Dead Cells - 12 - Devilman

Today on Dead Cells we are watching 'Highschool of the Dead'. Not only is it the best zombie horror anime out there, it is also just a straight-up super-fun series. Boobs and guns galore, this one will appeal to fans of The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later and any fun harem anime you can name. You can watch this on on Amazon Instant in the US, or Hulu and of course order the complete series on DVD and Bluray basically anywhere.

Dead Cells - 13 - Highschool of the Dead

Today on Dead Cells, we cover 'Fist of the North Star' which is a super gory action anime from 1986. Sibling rivalry at it’s finest. If you like martial arts, exploding heads and wild screaming, this one is for you. If, like me, you watched this years ago let me know if you think it has lost its punch. After nearly 30 years I think it stands up extremely well.

Dead Cells - 14 - Fist of the North Star

Today on Dead Cells, we cover 'Ghost Hunt'. This is a creepy little 2006 paranormal investigation anime that I found on Funimation a few years ago. With shades of X-Files and Outer Limits, those who like the mind of a ghost hunter will enjoy this one. With all my adoration of Hans Holzer as one of the first spirit investigators, and fascination with current technological trends, I do wish there was a second season of this.

A nice dark and brooding series from 2015 that gets a little Twilight Zone, like all good creepy anime do. Not a hell of a lot of blood here, save two episodes I highlight.
