My good friend Dan Crocket asked me to warm up his 40th birthday a couple of weekends ago with a two hour set. It was the first time I’d been asked to fill a time slot at a party with a set, and even though it was a house party, I took the assignment seriously and put in a lot of late night practice sessions and spent a lot of time creating a playlist with tracks that I wanted to share. 
 
Since I started this hobby, I have admittedly relied on the crutch of DJ software and when things don’t work out the way I plan, I had built a habit of using the sync button all too often. I wanted to see if I could get away with not using that button at all so I spent several late nights practicing and relying on my ear, rather than the visual of the software on my computer screen or the sync button. (which can be difficult since my mixer requires a computer to run). 

I am seriously glad I did this because I showed up to the party with all my tracks loaded onto my USB, but for some reason none of my track information loaded from the software so I had to fly blind, not being able to see any information on my tracks, I didn’t know the key, BPM, etc. I only had the track title and my ear to rely on and the sync button was not an option. 

After the initial panic, I settled in and had a fantastic time DJing and I’m super happy that I was thrown into that situation! It was an awesome learning experience and made me realize that I can rely on my ear when mixing music. If that would have happened a month before, I’m not sure I could have done it. 

Here is a recording from my practice session the night before. You may notice some errors or parts where the mixing is a bit off, but I’m proud of those errors because they show progress for myself and where I’m at in this journey. I hope you enjoy!

A Dose of House and Techno

A genre bending blend of house, techno, R&B, and recognizable vocals. This mix is bookended by meditative sounds and has gotten me through a lot of long runs. The ambient sounds on either end work perfectly for warming up and cooling down, with energy picking up throughout to keep you going. It was recorded on New Years Eve, without any prep or thought - just a natural flow of new (to me) tracks. I’ve sat on it until then, listening to it and picking it apart in every which way. I recently tested some of the tracks in front of a crowd and it went over well so I’ve decided to post it. 

I always grapple after recording a mix because there are inevitably things I would do differently after I go back and listen. I hesitate to put it out there publicly because a part of me wants to re-do it, so it can be perfect. But trying to recreate something that came organically never works out better in the end. You can tell the difference between something that’s rehearsed and something that flows naturally. Enjoy!
