Mix of the Week #530: Desert Island Disco - Buttery Cuts

It is not everyday we are sent a 5 hour mix from someone we have asked to join our Phonica mix series; but when Sheffield & Manchester legend Luke Una sends one… you have to jump straight into it! Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. Bosq from Whiskey Barons is back with more heat for the dancefloor in the form of a double 12” release.

“Movin On” continues the formula of classic sounding dance grooves with heavy Afro Latin influences throughout on this special all instrumental offering. The first track "Movin On" (featuring Kon as a co-producer) is a deep latin disco funk tune with a hypnotic rhythm track, lush strings, percussive piano montunos and a horn section riffing somewhere between Fela and early 90's house chops. On the flip, "Keep Movin" is an extended mid tempo disco bonus beat grown out of outtakes from the a-side and 3 days stuck inside during a Boston blizzard. A bubbling rhodes line rolls over raw drums and percussion with a bouncy synth bass line on this head nodder.

BOSQ "MOVIN' ON b/w KEEP MOVIN' 12"" Preview

Operating out of Melbourne, here is a group who have been showcasing jazz and diy experimentalism in a whole new light.

The four piece group have been making waves amidst funk, soul and jazz communities the world over and most recently released a nine track album via longstanding UK based imprint Mr Bongo, a label which has become an authority in the sound. 

"All News Is Good News" was released in July and was met with critical acclaim, it was well received and showcased the instrumental capabilities of a group very much on the rise. 

We invited them to piece together a mixtape, they do so in fine style.
