There are many recordings of ‘Purple Rain’ out there, but not many like this one. It may well prove to be one of a kind and we are therefore happy to share it with you.

In this live audio recording, this version of Purple Rain, Prince speaks directly to the audience during the song, in what may well be an explanation to this magical song. In any case Prince has a message for his audience, for us.

Maybe it was rehearsed in this way, maybe it was improv. It doesn’t really matter…

What matters is that we were able to recover the track from a very poor source and raise the audio quality to a presentable level. For you to enjoy, to listen to and learn from one of the greatest artists of our time.

George Clinton - the godfather of Funk - spans a musical career of more than five decades. He founded the Parliament, Funkadelic and P-Funk All Stars music collectives which have earned their place in music history as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1997). He is one of the most sampled artists to date.

'Atomic Dog' was released in 1982 by George Clinton on his album "Computer Games". Initially banned from radio it is now regarded as a classic, sampled by a multitude of artists.

This live recording was taped from the live television broadcast of RockPalast, August 17, 1985 at Loreley Open-Air Festival, Germany. It was the only GC & Funkadelic concert that year.

"Small Club, 2nd Show That Night" is probably the most famous Prince bootleg as it captures one of many after-shows Prince performed throughout the years. 

After completing a scheduled concert performance at a large stage concert hall Prince and his entourage would appear later that night at a local club for an impromptu show to the astonishment of the lucky few that happened to be there at the right moment and in the right place.

Many of these gigs have been recorded but none in such pristine sound quality. The listener gets to experience the performance as much as the audience did at that moment in time.

'Small Club' opens up with the soundcheck turning into an instrumental jam followed up by the Prince classic 'D.M.S.R'. 

"Show of hands! How many of you are drunk?" Prince says to the audience "Alright, you mean you actually gonna hear what we play? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?" which is probably indicative of the mood this gig was captured in; part of the audience may actually have been drunk or on higher spirits, to Prince and his fellow musicians it was all about the music.

The after-shows were a way to get off off the beaten track of tightly produced stadium events by playing other material or regular material in different ways. 

The 3rd track 'Just My Imagination' - a Temptations cover - forms one such shining example, as it also features one of Prince's best guitar solos - ever.  'Kansas City' and 'I'll Take You There' are the two other cover tracks on this recording.

In the freaky funky 'People Without' you will hear Prince say "People without, do cocaine"  - which seems to hit home with parts of the audience.

The show ends as it started - with a jam. 'Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic' with pieces of 'It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night' in parting.

Prince had the uncanny ability to 'add' to his songs on the live stage when compared to the studio versions of the tracks. 'House Quake', 'Forever In My Life' and 'Still Would Stand All Time' are stripped from their poppy R&B studio gloss, revealing their raw, uncut, Funk and Soul cores. 

This makes 'Small Club' stand out decades after it was (illegally) recorded and first released on vinyl and on double CD one year later. It is also the reason why we wanted to share at least one track of this classic for you to enjoy.

'Cold Sweat' probably best sums up the atmosphere of that night, the intensity and quality of playing at an unscheduled and unrehearsed gig in front of a couple of hundred of people.

The Aluu 4 was a necklace lynching that involved four young men, Ugonna Obuzor, Toku Lloyd, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, all students of the University of Port Harcourt. They were all lynched after they were falsely accused of theft in Aluu, a community in Ikwerre local government area, Rivers State, Nigeria on 5 October 2012. M.I. Abaga wrote Ashes in response to this tragedy.

This rendition features a mix of the classic 'Bongo Man' track (Jimmy Cliff, Give Thankx, LP, 1978) with another Reggae classic, 'Rivers of Babylon', originating from The Melodians in 1970 and made popular by Boney M in a Disco cover.

We can hear Jimmy and the band performing the song as a Nyabinghi chant, which carries a lot of spiritual meaning...

'Nyabinghi' is the oldest of the Mansions of Rastafari. Rastafarians pledge love to all human beings and do not believe in violence, because they believe that only Jah has the right to destroy. They make this pledge because of the power of words, believing that only when all of Jah's children make the pledge together, the oppressors will be destroyed.

In addition to the power of words, there is the power of sound: 'Nyabinghi' music and chanting. 

The rhythms of these chants heavily influenced Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae music. Three kinds of drums are used in 'Nyabinghi' music: bass, funde and keteh. The keteh plays an improvised syncopation rooted in Ashanti dance and drumming, the funde plays a regular one-two beat and the bass drum strikes loudly on the first beat, and softly on the third (of fourth) beat. 

'Nyabinghi' is at the root of Reggae music and Rasta culture, deeply tied to the African motherland. 'Bongo Man' is therefore not only a beautiful song but also a tribute to Jamaican culture and its African origins.
