Glenn Astro returns to Tartelet Records with Purple, a four-tracker of minimal slow burners and futuristic dance music, marking the label’s 50th 12-inch release. 

Since releasing his second album Homespun in late 2020, Glenn Astro has been quietly channeling his funky instincts towards new production approaches. Purple, a four-piece compilation of mutant future-boogie daubed in Rogers-Nelson hues, comes through with emotional heft. It also marks the 50th 12-inch release for Tartelet Records.

“Following up on Homespun, I wanted to try out some more dancefloor-oriented tracks again,” says Glenn Astro. “Keeping it simple and practical, while not being too predictable. I incorporated a lot of modular synth bits and experiments, with ‘Flux’ being an almost exclusively modular-based jam.”

Incorporating tricky sound design and fluid structures, Astro’s new lines of enquiry never come at the expense of the groove. From the opening thump of ‘Penduloop’ onwards it’s apparent that his rugged rhythmic kinks are present and correct to hook in the dancers, while the melodic drops later in the track edge in a little melancholic flavor to take the mind somewhere else entirely. On this opening track, the artist explores new territory with his version of early naughties minimal house – a welcome slow burner.

The EP title track ‘Purple’ slaps with purpose, not least in the Linn-esque drums and melodic bassline, but it’s a positively dreamy piece which skips on crooked beat formations and floats upwards via a multi-timbral tapestry of yearning synth shapes and robotic vocals. 

On ‘Out Of Office’ Glenn Astro provides a generous dose of electro nostalgia when he amps up the heavy-hearted feeling with aching string pads and electro-informed machine logic. The track becomes alive with its deep un-synced rhythms and dark bass notes, pushing further into the abyss.  

‘Flux’, with its tooly feel, takes the electronic mantra further and sheds light on the source of much of Astro’s new sound palette. 

Crucially, even in its techiest moments, an irrepressible humanity shines through across Purple. Glenn Astro’s soul is the binding agent which links his early, sample-heavy house to his more explorative new angles, and it comes through in abundance on this fully-formed release.

"Pink Shabab's "When You Said You Were Leaving Again" is yet another immaculately tangled earworm from the twisted musical mind of London-based songwriter/bassist Joe Carvell. Propelled by the clean and clear production of Emma (Astrobal) Mario, whose talents have also graced releases by Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble and Nina Savary, the track is marked by shards of brilliant colour which pierce through the sunrise-grey, high-tech surface. Falling into a genre of postmodern songwriting I would call the Deconstructivist Breakup Anthem, the song's four minutes and three seconds breeze by in what feels like half that time. The compulsive change-ups of Carvell's beguilingly complex structure proceed in three sections which abut each other like cliffs before a soda pop ocean bobbling with toy boats. Beginning like some lost Jazz/House Music hybrid from an obscure early-nineties compilation, the song wastes little time developing its dance-floor bona fides before an abrupt about-face begins a half-time section with diary-like spoken word vocals. "You'll forget all about me," he intones - "I can't be just friends." This day at the beach just turned a shade darker. Videogame cloud thunderheads appear on the horizon in the form of synthesized squiggles and a persistent Rhodes flourish, forming the sparse wallpaper of the middle section, which then leads into a substantive third act featuring all of the above plus a fast-moving plucked bassline and high, plaintive guitar notes. As the song disappears into a haze of echo, the listener is left wondering: were these three discrete sections all part of the same song? Yes, and it makes for irresistible listening."

Continuing their mission to turn old Middle Eastern finds into cuts for the dancefloor, production and DJ duo Dar Disku embark on release number four on their own eponymous label. This time they turn their attention to Egypt and the region of MENA, enlisting the skills of Saudi via Dublin artist Moving Still and Tjade to flip one of the tracks whilst they put their spin on the other. While the former's edit pairs Italo influences with arpeggiated bass and crisp drum work, the label bosses club-ready version of Cheb Mimoune's cover of regional classic ‘Abdel Kader’ pulls from Bubblegum and Egyptian G Funk influences.

Dar Disku will be donating 50% of the profits from the release directly to Middle-Eastern based charities.
