Minerals Online Roundtable II: ‘Extraction and Racial Capitalism

The second roundtable in our online series for 2024/25 seeks to unravel the complex interplay between resource extraction, labour dynamics, and racial capitalism in both historical and literary contexts.

We aim to gather literary critics and historians researching the intersections of extractivism and race, across different geographical regions and historical periods. Our goal is to foster a discussion that stretches across the global and the local, the past and the present. Central to our dialogue is an exploration of the origins of the ‘global colour line’ in the long histories of resource extraction.

Minerals Online Roundtable II: Extraction and Racial Capitalism

Prof Datin Dr Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahim graduated from UCD Medicine in 1997. 

Dr Norlinah is a senior consultant Neurologist and Professor of Neurology, specialising in movement disorders at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. 

In 2007, she completed a Fellowship training in Movement Disorders at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and became the First Chair of the Movement Disorder Council of Malaysia, from 2010-2014. Since 2022, she has been the Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Studies.

Dr Norlinah is a Steering Committee member for WHO-Lancet for Stroke in Low to Middle Income Countries and the Asia Oceanic Task Force. She is an active researcher with numerous publications on Parkinson’s disease, Ataxia, and on Dystonia and Stroke in international journals.

Dr Norlinah is involved in international collaborations with other bodies including the East Asia Parkinson’s Disease Genetic Consortium and the Global Parkinson’s Project under the Michael J Fox Foundation.

In 2018, Dr Norlinah received the UCD MGA Distinguished Graduate Award.

Prof Datin Dr Norlinah Mohamed Ibrahim - Professor of Neurology (UCD Class of 1997)

In this episode of the MUSAE podcast, Dr Aoife O'Gorman (UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science) talks to Angelo Cangelosi (Professor of Machine Learning and Robotics at the University of Manchester) and artist Maciej Chmara about creative solutions for our food systems with a particular focus on robotics.

MUSAE is an EU Horizon funded project developing approaches for art-driven innovation. 
The project brings together experts from different disciplines to define an innovative model to integrate artistic collaboration in the European Digital Hubs.

The vision is to enable companies to develop innovative products and services that address key issues in the food system.

The UCD team - Prof Lorraine Brennan and Dr Aoife O Gorman - bring expertise in food and health and are actively involved in mentoring the artists as they develop their future prototypes.

MUSAE - creative solutions for our food systems

Christine Quinlan graduated from UCD Medicine in 2009. 

Dr Quinlan is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. After completing her intern in St Vincent’s, where she developed an interest in plastics and orthopaedic surgery, Dr Quinlan solidified her commitment to Plastics in Cork during her Basic Specialist training. 

Dr Quinlan completed 5 years specialist Plastics training in Dublin before heading to London where she continued to work, study and hone her skills. Since January 2023, she has been back in Dublin and working at the Mater.

She is currently on a BSSH sponsored place on the British Orthopaedic Association “Future Leaders Programme” with a view to influencing change for the better in how a lot of plastic surgery trauma is managed nationally.

Dr Quinlan has been a mentor for RCSI Association of Women Surgeons since 2020. She also teaches on several courses, including the Emergency Management of Severe Burns.

Christine Quinlan - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon (UCD Class of 2009)

Professor Powderly graduated from UCD Medicine in 1979. Following internal medicine training in Dublin and Infectious Diseases training in St. Louis, he was appointed to the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine in 1987, and to full Professor in 1997.  He returned to Dublin in 2004, and from 2005 to 2012, he was Dean of Medicine and Head of the School of Medicine at UCD.  In 2013 he returned to Washington University in St. Louis.

Prof Powderly has been actively involved in HIV-related clinical research for over 35 years. He has been a member of numerous advisory groups on HIV and infectious diseases for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Canadian Institute for Health Research, and the European Medicines Agency.  More recently, he oversaw Washington University’s clinical and translational research response to SARS CoV-2 and was lead PI for the NIH’s ACTIV trials of immunomodulators in the treatment of severe COVID.

He is the Dr. J. William Campbell Professor of Medicine and the Larry J Shapiro Director of the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis.  He is also Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Science and Director of the Institute of Clinical and Translational Science at the Washington University School of Medicine, where he is co-director of the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Bill Powderly - J William Campbell Professor of Medicine Washington University (UCD Class of 1979)

Professor Michaela Higgins graduated from UCD Medicine in 2002 and completed medical and oncology training in Ireland prior to completing a three-year fellowship in medical oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

After fellowship, she was appointed as an Attending (Consultant) Physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and was an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston from 2010 to 2014. 

Prof Higgins was a consultant oncologist in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin from 2015 to 2020. She was Clinical Director of the Cancer Directorate of the Mater Hospital from 2019 to 2020. 

Prof Higgins has been a Consultant Medical Oncologist at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin and a Clinical Professor at UCD since 2020.  

Prof Higgins specialises in the care of patients with breast cancer. She is actively involved in clinical cancer research and former Director of the UCD Cancer Clinical Trials Cluster supported by the Health Research Board. Prof Higgins is current President of the Irish Society of Medical Oncology (ISMO).
