“Worrying about the Field of the History of Emotions in Ireland” is an event series funded by an Irish Research Council (IRC) New Foundations Award. The purpose of the events is to offer an accessible path through approaches, debates and past and current trends in the history of emotions. In doing so, they hope to highlight and support current scholarship in Ireland on emotion history while also fostering a research and teaching environment where the multiple layers of emotions and their role in the making of history can be debated.

The Series includes two seminars which will be held on 10.10.2019 and 15.11.2019 and a one-day conference which will be held on 18.01.2020.

The Series is a collaboration between the Architecture and Narrative project, the UCD Centre for the History of Medicine and the UCD Humanities Institute.

Worrying about the Field of the History of Emotions in Ireland

Episode 3 of 'A history of xenophobia - From the goldmines to the rise of the far right today' sees host Dr Irial Glynn (UCD) in conversation with Professor Elisabeth Ivarsflaten (Bergen) on the topic of gender and the radical right.

Elisabeth Ivarsflaten is a Professor in the Department of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen. She is the principal investigator of the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE) and the Norwegian Citizen Panel at the University of Bergen. 

Ivarsflaten holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford and was a Postdoctoral Prize Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, before joining the University of Bergen faculty. She specializes in the study of public opinion and political parties. Her research has appeared in the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, the European Journal of Political Research, and other peer-reviewed journals. Much of Ivarsflaten research, teaching and writing explores radical extreme right parties and social movements. She has also been engaged for many years in the development and application of innovative survey research. More recently she has been branching out to the field of law and politics.

Elisabeth Ivarsflaten (Gender and the Radical Right)

In this episode, Between Love and Coercion: Sexuality in the Holocaust. A lecture by Dr. Anna Hájková from University of Warwick.

This hybrid event took place in UCD School of History on 6 October 2022 and was jointly organised by University College Dublin Centre for War Studies, Holocaust Education Ireland and the UCD History Seminar Series in Gender History.

This talk explores the intersection of queer and Holocaust history through the example of an enforced relationship between two women, a guard and a Jewish woman, in a concentration camp in winter 1945. This coerced relationship raises issues of sexual violence, sexual barter, and homophobia. Based on survivors’ testimonies, postwar trials, and reparation files, Anna Hájková will show how a queer history of the Holocaust allows us to address agency and powerlessness of Holocaust victims.

Anna Hájková - Between Love and Coercion: Sexuality in the Holocaust

Maddalena Marinari is Associate Professor in History at Gustavus College in Minnesota. Maddalena has published extensively on immigration restriction and immigrant mobilization. 

She is the author of Unwanted: Italian and Jewish Mobilization Against Restrictive Immigration Laws, 1882-1965, which came out in 2020 with University of North Carolina Press, and provides the foundation for much of the discussion in this episode since it focuses on US opposition to Italian and Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century and outlines how Italian and Jewish communities in the US responded. 

Something that also informed the discussion is a special issue of the Journal of American History from 2022 that Maddalena co-edited with Erika Lee on the Immigration Act of 1924, which saw the US introduce an immigration quota system that substantially restricted immigration until the mid-1960s. Maddelena also co-edited, with Maria Cristina Garcia and Madeline Hsu, A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered: U.S. Society in an Age of Restriction, 1924-1965 and she has a second related co-edited anthology coming out in 2023 with Maria Cristina Garcia titled Whose America? U.S. Immigration Policy since 1980 with the University of Illinois Press. 

Maddelena is also one of the scholars behind the excellent #ImmigrationSyllabus, an online tool for anyone interested in understanding the history behind current debates on immigration in the US.

Maddalena Marinari - Unwanted: American restrictionism and Italian and Jewish immigrants, 1882-1924

Part 1 of Mark Rowe's interview as part of UCD School of Medicine's podcast series - MGA Clinical Influencers.

Dr Mark Rowe, is a 1991 graduate of UCD School of Medicine. 
Dr Rowe has been a practicing GP for over 27 years. He is the founder of the Waterford Health Park, which has become both the base for Dr. Rowe’s medical practice as well as the ‘Lifestyle Medicine Be Well Clinic’. 

In 2013, the Waterford Health Park received the Global Health Improvement Award, ‘A Place to Flourish.’ Dr. Rowe is the author of three books – ‘A Prescription for Happiness: The Ten Commitments to a Happier, Healthier Life’, ‘The Men’s Health Book’ & ‘The Vitality Mark’ published recently by Gill in 2022. Writing LGBTQ histories from the medieval to the modern

Orla Hardiman is Professor of Neurology, Head of the Academic Unit of Neurology and Academic Director of Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, and Consultant Neurologist at Beaumont Hospital.

She is a science and medical graduate from UCD, and trained in Neurology in Boston. She is the Director of the National ALS Clinical at the National Neuroscience Centre, Beaumont Hospital Dublin Ireland, where she provides clinical are for over 80% of Irish patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) .

She is the author of over 280 peer reviewed publications and editor of a textbook of Neurodegeneration.   Her research interests include the epidemiology, phenotype, biomarker discovery and genetics of ALS. She is Co- Chair of the European Network for Cure of ALS (ENCALS) and is editor in chief of the journal Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Degenerations, and a founder of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland and the Irish Brain Council.   She is the recipient of a number of international honours and awards including the AAN Sheila Essey Award in ALS Research and the International ALS Alliance Forbes Norris Award.

The Trinity Long Room Hub 2023 Annual Edmund Burke Lecture  was delivered by Professor Joanna Bourke on ‘Contemplating Evil: “Monstrous” Women in History, Politics, and Law, 1890s to the Present’.

Joanna Bourke is Professor Emerita of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is also the Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College. She is the prize-winning author of fifteen books, including What it means to be Human (2011) and Fear: A Cultural History (2015), as well as over 120 articles in academic journals. In 2022, Reaktion Books published Disgrace: Global Reflections on Sexual Violence and OUP published Birkbeck: 200 Years of Radical Education for Working People. Her Edmund Burke Lecture will draw on the subject of her current research towards a book entitled Evil Women. Her books have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Turkish, and Greek.

Digital Cultures is one of the research themes for the UCD College of Arts and Humanities Research Strategy for 2020-2024. The strategy brings together and supports the combined research excellence from across the College’s Schools, Institutes, Centres and subject disciplines.

As part of the Digital Cultures theme of the strategy, Dr Charles Ivar McGrath (UCD) and Dr Suzanne Forbes (Open University) recently gave an online presentation entitled: ‘Our shared built military heritage: the online mapping, inventorying and recording of the army barracks of Ireland, 1690-1921’. The presentation took place in January 2024 and focused on their work on the Army Barracks of Ireland project. The project is funded by the North South Research Programme and co-lead by University College Dublin and The Open University.

The project team are currently preparing a comprehensive online map of all army barracks operational on the island of Ireland between 1690 and 1921, due for launch in early 2024.

The ‘Women and the Irish Constitution: a roundtable discussion’ took place on Tuesday 13 February 2024 in the Humanities Institute, UCD Dublin. The panel included contributions from Dr Mary McAuliffe (UCD, chair) Prof. Caitriona Beaumont (London South Bank University), Associate Professor Jennifer Redmond (Maynooth University), Orla O'Connor (National Women's Council), Prof. Lindsey Earner Byrne (Trinity College Dublin) and the Sutherland School of Law Poet in Residence, Julie Morrissy. 

The referendum on 8 March 2024, proposing to delete Article 41.2 of the Irish constitution which refers to women's 'life within the home' and her domestic role 'without which the common good cannot be achieved', prompted this us to reflect on reactions to the article in 1937 and the relationship between women, home and work in 20th century Ireland. 

This roundtable brings together leading historians, a poet and the chair of the National Women's Council to discuss the past and present of these issues. Listen in to what was a fascinating conversation!

Moving from physiological to cognitivist to neuroscientific understandings of what emotions are, the history of emotions is now engaging more intensely with approaches that seek to bridge the divide between mind and body. This has methodological consequences: what are we looking for in the sources, what is worthy of interpretation? This lecture will discuss these challenges, how the notion of “emotion as a kind of practice” has been received in recent years, and where we might go from here.

Prof. Monique Scheer is Professor of Historical and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tübingen, where she also serves as Vice-President for International Affairs. She has co-authored Emotional Lexicons: Continuity and Change in the Vocabulary of Feeling (Oxford University Press, 2014) and is currently completing a monograph on the cultural history of enthusiasm.
