Part 1 of Mark Rowe's interview as part of UCD School of Medicine's podcast series - MGA Clinical Influencers.

Dr Mark Rowe, is a 1991 graduate of UCD School of Medicine. 
Dr Rowe has been a practicing GP for over 27 years. He is the founder of the Waterford Health Park, which has become both the base for Dr. Rowe’s medical practice as well as the ‘Lifestyle Medicine Be Well Clinic’. 

In 2013, the Waterford Health Park received the Global Health Improvement Award, ‘A Place to Flourish.’ Dr. Rowe is the author of three books – ‘A Prescription for Happiness: The Ten Commitments to a Happier, Healthier Life’, ‘The Men’s Health Book’ & ‘The Vitality Mark’ published recently by Gill in 2022. Mark is a regular media contributor nationally on RTE, Virgin, The Irish Times, The Business Post et al and internationally as a Wellbeing Leader & Conference Contributor where he shares his thoughts on positive health and wellbeing practices. As a Keynote speaker, Mark regularly delivers events and workshops for organisations around the world. His TEDx talk titled ‘The Doctor of the Future: Prescribing Lifestyle as Medicine’ amplifies his teachings. Notable engagements to date have included UCD Smurfit Executive Development, the American House of Representatives and a number of Fortune 500 companies.
Mark is among the first medical professionals globally to be certified as a Diplomate of the International Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Lifestyle Medicine is defined as an evidence-based ‘lifestyle first’ approach to prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Mark has always held a strong desire to change the culture of ‘a pill for every ill’. He advocates lifestyle change as the best medicine for lasting wellbeing.

Writing LGBTQ histories from the medieval to the modern

Orla Hardiman is Professor of Neurology, Head of the Academic Unit of Neurology and Academic Director of Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, and Consultant Neurologist at Beaumont Hospital.

She is a science and medical graduate from UCD, and trained in Neurology in Boston. She is the Director of the National ALS Clinical at the National Neuroscience Centre, Beaumont Hospital Dublin Ireland, where she provides clinical are for over 80% of Irish patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) .

She is the author of over 280 peer reviewed publications and editor of a textbook of Neurodegeneration.   Her research interests include the epidemiology, phenotype, biomarker discovery and genetics of ALS. She is Co- Chair of the European Network for Cure of ALS (ENCALS) and is editor in chief of the journal Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the Frontotemporal Degenerations, and a founder of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland and the Irish Brain Council.   She is the recipient of a number of international honours and awards including the AAN Sheila Essey Award in ALS Research and the International ALS Alliance Forbes Norris Award.

The Trinity Long Room Hub 2023 Annual Edmund Burke Lecture  was delivered by Professor Joanna Bourke on ‘Contemplating Evil: “Monstrous” Women in History, Politics, and Law, 1890s to the Present’.

Joanna Bourke is Professor Emerita of History at Birkbeck, University of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She is also the Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College. She is the prize-winning author of fifteen books, including What it means to be Human (2011) and Fear: A Cultural History (2015), as well as over 120 articles in academic journals. In 2022, Reaktion Books published Disgrace: Global Reflections on Sexual Violence and OUP published Birkbeck: 200 Years of Radical Education for Working People. Her Edmund Burke Lecture will draw on the subject of her current research towards a book entitled Evil Women. Her books have been translated into Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Portuguese, Czech, Turkish, and Greek.

Patrick Anthony's talk -"Underlands, Empires, Atmospheres: Extractive Histories of Environmental Science" - took place in UCD Humanities Institute on November 7 2023, and was introduced by Dr Ge Tang.

About Patrick:

Patrick Anthony is a social historian of science and environment in central Europe and the World in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. His research ranges from German mining and working-class families in natural history to transimperial networks of earth and atmospheric science that linked Central Europe to commodity frontiers in the Americas and northern Eurasia.

He is currently an Irish Research Council Fellow at University College Dublin. Here, he is pursuing a project called Anthropocene Frontiers: The Climate of Conflict in Siberia and the Steppe, a study of how settler colonial violence in the marches of the Russian Empire generated knowledge about climate and the human capacity to change it. In fall 2024, he will begin a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship at Uppsala University.

His forthcoming book, Unearthed: Science and Environment Across Mineral Frontiers, is an archaeology of environmental sciences assembled through mining industries that linked central Europe to empires in the Americas and northern Eurasia.

His research has been published in journals such as Isis, Journal of the History of Ideas, Historical Journal, and Journal of Social History.  After receiving his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 2021, he was a DAAD Prime Fellow at Ludwig-Maximillians-Universität, Munich, a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, and a Junior Core Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at the Central European University in Budapest.

Patrick Anthony - Underlands, Empires, Atmospheres: Extractive Histories of Environmental Science

Digital Cultures is one of the research themes for the UCD College of Arts and Humanities Research Strategy for 2020-2024. The strategy brings together and supports the combined research excellence from across the College’s Schools, Institutes, Centres and subject disciplines.

As part of the Digital Cultures theme of the strategy, Dr Charles Ivar McGrath (UCD) and Dr Suzanne Forbes (Open University) recently gave an online presentation entitled: ‘Our shared built military heritage: the online mapping, inventorying and recording of the army barracks of Ireland, 1690-1921’. The presentation took place in January 2024 and focused on their work on the Army Barracks of Ireland project. The project is funded by the North South Research Programme and co-lead by University College Dublin and The Open University.

The project team are currently preparing a comprehensive online map of all army barracks operational on the island of Ireland between 1690 and 1921, due for launch in early 2024.

The ‘Women and the Irish Constitution: a roundtable discussion’ took place on Tuesday 13 February 2024 in the Humanities Institute, UCD Dublin. The panel included contributions from Dr Mary McAuliffe (UCD, chair) Prof. Caitriona Beaumont (London South Bank University), Associate Professor Jennifer Redmond (Maynooth University), Orla O'Connor (National Women's Council), Prof. Lindsey Earner Byrne (Trinity College Dublin) and the Sutherland School of Law Poet in Residence, Julie Morrissy. 

The referendum on 8 March 2024, proposing to delete Article 41.2 of the Irish constitution which refers to women's 'life within the home' and her domestic role 'without which the common good cannot be achieved', prompted this us to reflect on reactions to the article in 1937 and the relationship between women, home and work in 20th century Ireland. 

This roundtable brings together leading historians, a poet and the chair of the National Women's Council to discuss the past and present of these issues. Listen in to what was a fascinating conversation!

In this episode of the MUSAE podcast, Dr Aoife O'Gorman (UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science) talks to Angelo Cangelosi (Professor of Machine Learning and Robotics at the University of Manchester) and artist Maciej Chmara about creative solutions for our food systems with a particular focus on robotics.

MUSAE is an EU Horizon funded project developing approaches for art-driven innovation. 
The project brings together experts from different disciplines to define an innovative model to integrate artistic collaboration in the European Digital Hubs.

The vision is to enable companies to develop innovative products and services that address key issues in the food system.

The UCD team - Prof Lorraine Brennan and Dr Aoife O Gorman - bring expertise in food and health and are actively involved in mentoring the artists as they develop their future prototypes.
