Mastawesha was the first collection of traditional songs from Ethiopian sole-troubadour Kassa Tessema. Tessema sings in a gravel strained melancholy, plucked kora in the foreground captured with single microphone immediacy. An incredibly powerful, beautiful work pressed up on deluxe double vinyl for the Ethio heads. Born on Feb. 24, 1927 in the province of Shoa, Ethiopia. At the age of 17, he joined the military orchestra and played with them until he died of natural causes on Oct. 11, 1974. His music deserves this legacy.

In the spring of 2007, musician and producer Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy decided to launch his own label. Named after the house he grew up in, Claremont 56 would release beautiful music by friends, associates, collaborators and like-minded musicians.

In the 10 years that have passed since, Claremont 56 has more than surpassed Murphy’s modest expectations. It has built up a cult following around the world, with listeners responding positively to the label’s combination of magical music, beautiful artwork, and impeccable packaging.

To mark the label’s first decade, Murphy has put together a sumptuous vinyl box set of previously unheard material, produced and presented with the same attention to detail that listeners have come to expect.

Each copy of Claremont 56: 10 Years contains five weighty slabs of wax and a bespoke info sheet, housed in a specially designed, hand-numbered box with de-embossed logos on the front and rear. There is also a limited-edition run of 200 copies which come with an additional 12” containing exclusive remixes and a brand new Paqua track, ‘Dalas’.

However impressive the packaging, it’s the music that makes Claremont 56: 10 Years stand out. Featuring a mixture of unreleased tracks and brand new remixes of vintage label releases, the highlights come thick and fast.

As you’d expect, some of the most impressive contributions come from those artists you could describe as “legendary”, including Chicago deep house originators Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Can legend Holger Czukay kindly contributes one of the standout moments, the eccentric ‘Music To Be Murdered By’, from his own unreleased catalogue, while Afro-cosmic pioneer Daniele Baldelli joins forces with Marco Dionigi to deliver a typically spacey remix of Bison’s ‘Familiar Stranger’. There’s also an epic, Afro-tinged dub disco remix of Smith & Mudd’s ‘Nether’ by Norwegian scene founder Bjorn Torske.

Elsewhere, Good Timin’ man Jex Opolis turns an overlooked track by Paraiso into a samba-boogie killer, Sean P dubs out Zee Erf’s beautiful cover of ‘Southern Freeez’, and Phil Mison turns FreshRo’s laidback electrofunk cut ‘Pacific State’ into a breezy, Balearic gem. Look out too, for the emotion-rich beauty of Statues’ ‘River Darkness’ – a track arguably worth the cost of the box set on its own – and the deep space explorations of Almunia’s Leo Ceccanti.

We could go on, but we’re running out of space. Suffice to say, Claremont 56: 10 Years is a lovingly compiled, curated and presented celebration of the label’s first decade.

Macho Gololi  is  A  Swahili word meaning  '' Round Marble  eyes''- another love story while on my way to Lamu Island  for acoustic tour 2018.
Inspired by  real story where I met  an Islamic girl wearing. '' Hijab'' on plane , just as my normal habit of poking my neighbor on my travels- I was struck by round ,white beautiful  eyes that got me to fall in love without knowing why? And since the journey  was quite short, we never  got to exchange  much and lady also feared to be seen with a non-islamic fellow  as it is against the  ''Sharia Law'' in most cities where the religion dominates a big percentage of  Inhabitants, so that was the end of our meeting that led to me thinking about her  for as long I could remember , and with Guitar  - A song came to rescue my situation and  ''Macho Gololi'' was born

Following up on their collaborative single with Colombian trio Ghetto Kumbé, released in November 2020, Parisian collective and record label Mawimbi unveils another extract from their debut album, to be released in June, 2021.

Although it definitely sounds like “afro electro”, a genre Mawimbi has been championing since their debuts as a DJ collective, “Fôli Kadi”, their second single in collaboration with Malian artist Fatim Kouyaté (Midnight Ravers), offers a more intimate and melodic profile, drawing in the inherent melancholy  of Mandingue music and the power of contemporary pop music.

"Fôli Kadi" has some of the essential features found in Mawimbi's debut album. In its musical content on the one hand, as it plays on a subtle balance between a dance beat and emotional melodic content, which gradually rises and ends in a cascade of kora and cymbals.

In its history too, because more than any other tracks on Mawimbi's LP, "Fôli Kadi" owes a lot to the meetings and opportunities gleaned by the collective over the last five years. Their collaboration with kora player Chérif Soumano and singer Fatim Kouyaté was made possible by Lyon-based producer Dom Peter, leader of Franco-Malian project Midnight Ravers and manager of Blanc Manioc. "Fôli Kadi" was made "here and there", through chance encounters and the sharing of musical vibes - for example, Soumano's kora line was recorded in one take as he was passing by the studio to send his greetings. 

"Fôli Kadi" translates to "music feels good" in bambara, a language widely spoken in Mali!
