Ungodly War is one of the many stand outs from our 2020 reissue of Lamont Butler’s one and only album It’s Time For A Change. Taking inspiration from jazz, soul and funk, Ungodly War is a dynamic track recorded some 50+ years ago in Lousiville, Kentucky. 

“People have always loved that track (Ungodly War), people would always want to talk to me about it and you know it’s more relevant now than ever before…it’s stood the test of time” Lamont Butler

For this release we wanted to try something a little different and so, for the first time on Miles Away, we’ve enlisted the help of a musician to add a little somethin’ somethin’. Someone who has spent a lifetime hoarding, editing and compiling rare soul and disco records. There’s was only really only one person at the top of our list and he goes by the name Al Kent. 

Al’s sound is big and his edit flows from the off, allowing everything we love about the original to shine through perhaps even more brightly than before. With a little beefiness added to the drums and a subtle restructuring in parts, the result is an exemplary 7” bullet ready for the dancefloor. 

On the flip is a deep cut Get Up And Praise The Lord, which features on the album and was a track many a DJ reached for from the album.

To celebrate the forthcoming release of their new album, Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Guillaume Metenier’s Soul Sugar collective has offered up a brand-new, digital-only single, ‘Cool Down’.

Co-produced by Metenier with fellow French artists Blundetto and Blackjoy, the track is a sun-kissed slab of 21st century dub built around a typically weighty rhythm and joyous, afternoon-bright instrumentation. Underpinned by hazy bass, authentically shuffling reggae-style drums and echoing effects, ‘Cool Down’ boasts some superb guitar licks courtesy of Blundetto, as well as inspired synthesizer and organ motifs provided by Metenier under his now familiar Booker Gee alias.

‘Cool Down’ is one of a handful of previously unheard tracks on Excursions in Soul, Reggae, Funk & Dub, Soul Sugar’s fourth album. The set gathers together previously released but now hard-to-find tracks that the collective has released on different formats over the last few years, including inspired reggae cover versions of Luther Vandross favourite ‘Never Too Much’ and Marvin Gaye classic ‘I Want You’. It will be released by Gee Recordings later this Spring.

Between March - April 2020, during the first lockout in Spain and confined at home, I started a series of songs called "Music For Pandemic States" with a limited setup of gear. During that month I uploaded three episodes to Bandcamp to document and soundtrack that uncertain times.

Months later, I decided to press a limited edition of 50 cd copies of those three tracks, plus two new unreleased, only available on the physical version.

An Ep of 5 mysterious and personal songs, that flowed in an unusually natural way, floating between downtempo and IDM.
