Bea was live with a show of two halves. Gordon Bruce joins her in the first half with a vinyl-only mix with tracks from Alice Clark, Cooly G and Djavan. In the second half, Sophie Lvoff & Elia David celebrate womxn all over the world with a mixed bag of tracks all from female artsists.

Today's premiere comes from Bristol jazz duo, Run Logan Run. The duo have a reputation for making a lot of noise for just two people, but on “Sleepshop” they take a deep, minimalist approach.

Having bonded over a shared passion for improvisation, spiritual jazz and heavier experimental music, Andrew Neil Hayes (saxophones / electronics) and Matt Brown (drum kit / percussion) formed Run Logan Run a few years back and have gone on to tour the UK extensively, sharing stages with the likes of Colin Stetson, Melt Yourself Down, Shabaka Hutchings, and The Bad Plus.

Their 2018 debut, ‘The Delicate Balance of Terror’, was recorded and produced at North London’s Total Refreshment Centre by Danalogue & Betamax (The Comet Is Coming). Self released, it was followed by another collection of both impactful and meditative jazz on their 2019 ‘Koan’ EP. And last year, Run Logan Run made two significant contributions to fellow-Bristolians Worm Discs acclaimed scene-surverying compilation, ‘New Horizons: A Bristol Jazz Sound’, finding support on Gilles Peterson’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

“Sleepshop” is due to drop at the end of this month on Worm Discs, alongside the rowdier “Caveman Disco”, on digital services, Bandcamp download and as a limited 7” dubplate. Whilst the differing energy levels between songs isn’t rare for the duo, it  also reflects the restless push and pull felt by many of late. 

“Sleepshop”, Andrew tells us “is about darker subject matter which you'll understand if you look up that name. It was inspired by our love for the new Ted Poor album ‘You Already Know’, which is beautifully recorded and has an amazing combination of space and minimalism. Both tracks were an attempt to write short self contained expressions.”

Exclusive Premiere: Run Logan Run "Sleepshop" (Forthcoming on Worm Discs)

Amalgama Music is back with an e.p. from Nottingham Broken Beat producer, Cyclonix.  We return to our Broken Beat roots with this release that showcases all the different flavors the genre is known for and has morphed into. Staying true to his love for all things Bruk, Jazz, Techno and bass, Cyclonix delivers 5 tracks that showcase his versatility in syncopated rhythms, as well as straight up 4 to the floor business. The highlight of the release is “Churches”, which is the soundtrack to a Sunny day with its melody driven by warm Rhodes chords and shifty beat. Miami producer, SomeJerk , steps somewhat out of his Footwork/Jungle element and delivers a remix of “Churches” that is as beautiful as the original and very much true to the sound that he is known for. 

“So Crazy” was especially made for the rebrand of Amalgama and is a Techno Broken Beat number that is fueled by its driving Toms, metallic synth, and bleeps, that reminds the listener to crank up the volume. In “Thrax” Cyclonix delivers a slow techno burner that gradually churns into a hypnotic dancefloor groover. In all the EP is a true testament to the diversity of Cyclonix and Amalgama.

PREMIERE: Cyclonix - Churches [Amalgama Music]

MIMS is extremely excited to premiere the truly otherworldly and yet beautiful sounds of Ruth Goller, with “Often they came to visit, even just to see how she was (M1)”, the lead single from forthcoming debut solo album, “Skylla", on Bex Burch's Vula Viel Records. A strong recommendation for today’s Bandcamp Friday.

Taking inspiration from Bulgarian folk song, via free jazz and the Brazilian singer-songwriter & guitarist 'Joyce', to the Italian Alps from where she hails, Goller turns bewitching compositions from improvised bass guitar harmonics in different tuning systems into ethereal polyphonic songs.

Ruth Goller’s ‘Skylla’ shines a long-awaited light on one of the most important musicians to have driven and revolutionised the UK jazz and improv scenes over the last 16 years. The bassist, vocalist, composer, environmentalist and now solo artist, draws inspiration from deep within to create a stunningly original and beautiful piece of work.

Hailed by the Guardian for her “thunderous bass-guitar hooks’, Goller has been a true trailblazer for London’s jazz scene, since touring and recording with Acoustic Ladyland and Melt Yourself Down, through to Let Spin and Vula Viel, whilst performing and recording with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, Kit Downes, Sam Amidon, Bojan Z, Marc Ribot, and Rokia Traoré. 

‘Skylla’ sees Goller almost looking back to the raw instincts that drove her as a teen punk musician. Working with different tunings for each song, Goller composed instinctively based on what she could hear, moment-to-moment. As Goller puts it, “at that point muscle memory doesn’t work anymore so I have to trust my ear completely”.

Ruth tells us ““Often they came to visit, even just to see how she was. (M1)” is pure instinct and improvisation. I made it into a tune afterwards. It's the most improvised piece of the whole album, and completely accidental tuning. My bass was tuned that way, when I took it out from my softcase after a plane-jurney. This tune represents water to me. I am happy and eternal in water.”

Hailing from the Italian-Austrian border, Goller grew up fascinated by the differences and similarities in the intentions behind speech. This ear for words has influenced her approach to vocals; improvising them through streams of consciousness around her bass playing, focusing on the sound and feeling, and almost inventing a new language through abstraction. As Goller puts it, “Music is a language and I always want to learn as much as I can about it”.

Initially Goller recorded all the vocals alone, before inviting accomplished and celebrated vocalists Lauren Kinsella and Alice Grant to lend their additional voices to particular pieces;  knowing they would rise to the challenge of singing words free of language to irregular tunings. Mercury-Award nominee Kit Downes, produced and mixed the album.

Band on the Wall’s latest 7” release is from producer, musician and DJ, Contours. Known for applying his own percussive dexterity, his sound is placed within the intersection of House, Jazz, Broken-Beat and percussive experimentation.

Double A-side ‘The Programme / Conga Quinto (Dub)’ proves Contours is an artist continually capable of blending the electronic and organic into a sound that re-invents and surprises. The Programme is a woozy mix of sunset synths, squelchy bass, crisp propulsive hi-hats and snare-led rhythms. The sound has a depth you can sink into, yet the skittering beats add levity and a club-leaning energy to the track.

This release is the latest in an ongoing sonic evolution for Contours, having released music on labels such as Tru-Thoughts, Rhythm Section and Anma Records. His music has received praise from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Alex Nut, Bradley Zero and others. In 2018 he joined up with Banana Hill party founder, DJ and producer Cervo to head to Uganda. They worked with percussion troupe Fonkodelis Arkestra out of the Nyege Nyege-affiliated Boutiq Studio on the boundary traversing 12” Kawuku Sound. Last year in lockdown he worked with instrument builder and artist Seth Sutton out of their Manchester and Cumbria homes to put together Balafon Sketches. This release retained Burford’s love of organic percussive instrumentation but channelled it through a minimalist and contemporary classical sound world.

The Programme / Conga Quinto (Dub) are part of ‘The Singles Club’ 7” releases from Manchester jazz institution Band on the Wall and their new label Band on the Wall Recordings. Based out of the iconic music venue, charity and cultural hub, the label has already released future neo-soul 7” Forgive You and is set to follow this up with material from the likes of Lovescene and Secret Night Gang, among others, building on a successful compilation released year to raise funds during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Contours music speaks to the heart of this project and Band on the Wall as a whole in its mission to explore the world through an openness to diverse sonic and cultural influences, whilst celebrating the talent that exists within its home city.
