We wanted to make a "proper" video, deciding to be really original and do a mock-up of a Zoom call. We doubt this has been done before. Lots of fun was had by all, and a huge thank you to our friends and families for their participation!

Nowhere Left To Go

Special edition of classic UFK track ‘She Says’ - one of several recordings to mark our 20th anniversary. 

The song - a staple of our sets during the early 2000s, and first recorded in 2001 - is written by UFK founder member, drummer and guitarist (rarely at the same time) Ed Mayle.

Ed wrote this about his first girlfriend who was, at this time, still a figment of his imagination and he was already arguing with her.

The chorus of this song was written just over 15 years ago, and was only ever briefly worked on during practice sessions with the band in the mid
2000s. 

The original lyrics were salvaged from an old blue exercise book, and the new and completed version of the song - about paranoia, isolation and inadequacy - was arranged and recorded remotely as part of our new Remote Sessions EP in August 2020.

Into The Blue

A relentless, driving, brass-flecked lament to the end of a relationship.  

Alternatively, "I guess I was just thinking about trains" (Ed Mayle: October, 2020).  

Inspired by Useless ID. Slick Shoes, 4ft Fingers (the headline band at UFK's first gig just over 20 years ago), No Use For A Name and countless other bands that provided the soundtrack to our school days.  And work days.  Most days, in fact.

Kicked By Sounds (demo)

A song that took shape after Ed and I wrote a simple riff during a Maths lesson at school in Lincolnshire over 20 years ago, 2am (as it was known then) featured prominently in our early gigs as a three-piece pop-punk band.  

The lyrics and arrangements have changed slightly, but the recording you hear now is largely the same as the song we thrashed out in the Cleethorpes Beachcomber or the West Marsh Club in Grimsby in the early 2000s.  

Recorded and mixed remotely in late October 2020, the track is the seventh of our ever-extending EP 'Remote' - a collection of new songs - and new recordings of old favourites - to mark UFK's 20th anniversary.

The Road Below

Written in 2001, Strike Down was a mainstay of our sets in the early 2000s. 

Then, a joyous, brass-spiked skank-fest with a sense of hope in the midst of melancholy.   A song about seeking joy and being optimistic in the face of confusion, disillusionment and isolation.  

The beat has changed, but the mood remains.  

Recorded remotely as part of our 'Remote Sessions EP', celebrating over 20 years of making music (on-and-off) together.

the remote ep

Strike Down '21

UFK formed in 2000 as a three-piece pop punk group, playing our first gig as support to 4ft Fingers at the Cleethorpes Beachcomber.  By mid 2002, we expanded to a five-strong ska-punk outfit, with Tom Rennison (trumpet) and Nadeem Crowe (alto sax) joining to add some bite to our new roster of songs. 

Gigs came thick-and-fast until late 2004, by which time we had all drifted away to University.  In those early active years, we recorded two EPs (Four Lives Left & Bullet In View) toured the country with The Wayriders, headlined a several of the famous(ish!) Cleethorpes Winter Garden  Christmas Gigs, supported ska legends The Beat and The Selecter, as well as top early 2000s UK ska and punk names including Lightyear, King Prawn, Whitmore, Not Katies and Nerve.  

Around a decade of occasional sessions and joint side-projects (small acoustic gigs, live sessions and studio recordings as Under Four Skies) followed, before we reunited with purpose to record two songs over a weekend at the Pump House in Louth, Lincolnshire.  One of those tracks - 'Mayday' - was featured on the BBC Introducing.  

In 2020 - our 20th anniversary year - we recorded our latest track 'Nowhere Left To Go' remotely, in the midst of the Covid-19 lock-down.
