Axel Boman broke through in 2010 with his Holy Love EP, released on DJ Koze's Pampa Records. The track Purple Drank became an instant classic in underground house music circles – since then, Boman has toured extensively while releasing original productions and remixes on labels like DFA, Hypercolour, Kompakt, Permanent Vacation and Ovum, as well as on Studio Barnhus, the label he runs together with Kornél Kovács and Petter Nordkvist.

Family Vacation, Boman's debut album, arrives on Studio Barnhus in November 2013.

“I decided to go through the vast collection of ideas and sketches I had on my computer, as a final project before I set that machine on fire and let it all go up in flames. Kind of like what Lee "Scratch" Perry did with The Black Ark in Kingston in the 70's. A friend says the album sounds like “weird Jamaican space disco" so maybe it's a fitting reference”, says Boman himself.

Axel Boman's music has also been described as "raw and playful house music drenched in oceans of soul". He graduated with a master's degree from Valand School of Fine Arts in 2010 and currently lives in the calm and peaceful Stockholm suburb Gröndal.

Early in 2018, the world was introduced to Mildlife through their debut album Phase. Few first releases amass praise from Mojo, The Guardian, BBC 6 Music, The Express, and Shindig, then go on to be celebrated by DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, Worldwide FM, Dummy and Indie Shuffle. But it’s precisely this eclectic mix of genres, tastes, and influences that brought Mildlife together, and what they committed to reflecting in their sound. After a surreal start to 2018, the four-piece completed a sold-out national tour of Australia, and recently announced plans to cross the oceans for their debut Europe and UK tours.

With the release of their debut imminent, Mildlife took retreat at Research Records HQ in Melbourne, staying overnight after recording each morning and afternoon. It resulted in the evolution of the title track, newly imagined and re-contextualised at increased tempo with swathes of improvisation throughout. The studio recording was the culmination of the song’s growth in a live setting, evolving on club stages and at festivals throughout 2017.

Mildlife’s knack for locked-in grooves and celestial tones features heavily across ‘Phase II’, a more than 11-minute sonic journey. Kevin McDowell's synth soars while Adam Halliwell’s growing prowess as a flautist is peppered over James Donald’s shimmering percussion. Shortly after, Tom Shanahan's phased bass appears, and the four lock into a groove that gives a subtle nod to 1960s Krautrock band, Can. It’s not long before ‘Phase II’ erupts into a cosmic jazz-funk that urges you to move. It sucks you in, free of worry and consequence; utterly otherworldly. It’s no surprise that the band has been described as “kaleidoscopic”, “irresistible” and “enchanting”. With Mildlife, you’ll always leave wanting more.

Roy Blues is the alias of Ryan D’Sylva, an emerging dance and electronic producer from Melbourne, Australia. Originally trained as a drummer, D’Sylva still lends his drumming skills to a number of Australian acts, including fellow producers Roland Tings and LucianBlomkamp. D’Sylva started creating his own music under the Roy Blues moniker after fortuitously laying his hands on the Roland Juno 60 while visiting a studio in Los Angeles. “I became addicted to that tangible feeling of manipulating sound waves, he says. “In turn I saved up the cash for my first synthesizer and started to make music under the name Roy Blues.” Borne out of experimentation with a range of instruments and synths — The Juno 60, Roland RE-201 Space Echo and a Moog — these tracks have an exploratory feel, bending and shifting as they progress with a liquid quality. “The music on this release flowed pretty naturally whenever I was sat in front of these instruments” he says. D’Sylva sketched out the material for his first release sporadically throughout daily life: during downtime at a café, the time spent waiting for a train, in the dark after late nights out when he couldn't sleep. “My favourite place to write is at airports whilst in transit,” he says. “It was something about planes taking off and landing landing, seeing people all on their own individual journeys. “Lotus” is lighter on its feet, as tiny vapors of organic sounds give way to a steady building synth cut.
Recorded and mixed in D’Sylva’s modest but beloved home studio in Melbourne, D’Sylva’s material eventually reached the ears of Cascine, who will be releasing the EP on their singles imprint CSCN. Roy Blues’s Pyramid EP is out June 28 on CSCN.
