Ugly Funk

Petals in Sound (Louise Baldwin) is a London-based (UK) artist, producer, and DJ. Born and raised in the seaside town of Southport in Merseyside, Petals in Sound has spent the past two years crafting her sound as an artist/producer, citing techno, disco, house, and everything in between as her influences. 
Having spent years writing music, performing in bands and working in the music industry, it wasn’t until 2017, after purchasing an Arturia Minilab MKII, Ableton Live and a Pioneer DDJ400, that she immersed herself into the world of electronic music production and DJing.  Heavily influenced by the synth-heavy production techniques used by the likes of Daniel Avery and Bicep, Petals in Sound’s music draws references from both acts as well as LOFI-house favourite Baltra, through to the downtempo jazz sounds of Laurence Guy and Chaos in the CBD. She is also a huge fan of all things WOLF Music.
Her debut EP 'PALACE' was released in September 2020 under Miami + Mexico-based Space/ Techno/ House label and party producer Boyanza Records. Additionally, her track ‘Sunlight’ features on the VA compilation ‘SPHERES OF SOUND: In support of Roshni and UKBP' (released 20th July 2020) in collaboration with Manchester-based collective Shifting Spheres.
Petals in Sound playfully attacks the fabric of deep house, pushing and pulling the genre into modern territory with clever and precise production techniques. Warm, lush heady house music, even the mildly weightier darker track of 'Titahi Bay' still stays connected to the heady feeling which is true testament to the producer. With DJ appearances at Folklore and Rye Society in London under her belt, Petals in Sound has also pulled together mix sessions delivering a unique blend of genres including house, disco, Italo, techno and minimal house for the likes of Melodic Distraction (Liverpool), SISU (London) and Empty Plate Radio (Miami).

Edge of the Wood

Emile Facey lives in Penge, South East London. ‘When writing this music I became very interested in the history of the area I live in, imagining what it had been like when the ancient Great North Wood was still standing and the now busy urban area was a tiny hamlet sitting at the edge of a vast forest. I read that Penge was first recorded under the name Penceat in an Anglo-Saxon deed dating from 957 and that many historians believe the name of the town is derived from the Celtic word Penceat, which means "edge of wood". The Porcupine Meadow and a toll gate were important landmarks in the area.’

First inspired by Kraftwerk and the Street Sounds hip-hop compilations in the early 1980s Emile was hooked on electro from an early age. In 1998 he started promoting electro events in London and connecting with other producers and DJs from the UK and abroad. This led to him building his first bedroom studio and, after a few years of learning, honing and recording, Emile’s Plant43 project saw it’s first vinyl release in 2006 on the much-missed Ai Records. Since then he’s released nearly 100 tracks on many highly respected labels including Frustrated Funk, CPU, Semantica, Shipwrec, AC Records, Bleep43 Recordings, Cultivated Electronics and Trust.

He is also a graphic designer, illustrator and co-founder of bleep43.com, which is dedicated to celebrating electronic music. Since 2002, Emile has played live alongside DJ Stingray, ERP/Convextion, Surgeon, DJ Overdose, Urban Tribe and many others.

Eudemonia

‘Edge of the Wood’ is the first release on new label Eudemonia. Emile explains, ‘In early 2017 label owner Sascha reached out to tell me about his dream, starting a record label which allowed the artists the freedom to express themselves musically and visually but also to give something back to society, with a proportion of profits going to Musicians Without Borders, an organisation using music to connect communities in war torn countries. I have really enjoyed collaborating with him over the last year and we have created an EP which features tracks and imagery which I hope meet our objectives. I have poured all of my emotion and energy into this project and am very proud to be the first artist to be released on Eudemonia.’

For this new Premiere, we have a track by the Zagreb-based music producer & DJ Ivna Ji from the upcoming EP "ZwaarteKracht 3" [ZK003] on the Belgian Electro Label : ZwaarteKracht.

ZwaarteKracht was founded towards the end of 2018 and are based in Belgium, their previous two releases have been hosting exquisite sounds from a broad range of artists such as Innershades, Cleromancer, Datawave, Francois Dillinger, Deemphasis, DerDieDas and label boss Arsonist Recorder.

The track we chose to premiere is the Z1 and entitled ‘Diatom’. It will be available from February 15, 2020 on Limited Edition Vinyl + Digital at most online retailers.

ZwaarteKracht are very proud to present the 3rd edition in the series, inviting some very unique and forward thinking artists.

The very prolific Zagreb-based producer Ivna Ji kicks off side “Z” mercilessly grooving a bassline down your spine like an itchy virus. Followed up close by Errorbeauty, who has been pushing boundaries through her own label Arkada Records (which she runs along with XOR12). Her track here displays some geniously organic machinerythms into an eerie dystopian escape.
On side “K”, Arsonist Recorder hosts this record with an invasion of microbug machinery in a heavily rocking track that continues to sonically outline the reactive views of this label, only to prepare the listener for UK-based producer and dj Kim Cosmik’s industrialised funk-anthem which concludes this release, masterfully drilling the beat into the floor with a rumbling subbass-message to society.
