Composed for the Semplice Quartet, “The Ruins of Ani” appears as an audio reproduction of the architectural mosaic created by the combination of structures from different architectural styles in the ancient city of Ani, which has hosted many civilizations throughout history.

Modelled on the eclectic style formed by the combination of structures from these different origins, the piece presents a monolithic musical narrative where the string quartet turns into a single composite instrument.

   Semplice Quartet için bestelenen “Ani Harabeleri”, tarih boyunca birçok medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmış olan Ani antik şehrindeki farklı mimari üsluplardan yapıların bir arada bulunarak ortaya çıkarttığı mimari mozaiğin işitsel bir yeniden üretimi olarak karşımıza çıkar.
Bu değişik kökenlerden yapıların bir araya gelmesiyle oluşan eklektik stili model alan eser, yaylı dörtlünün tekil bir kompozit enstrümana dönüştüğü ve farklı ses ailelerinden tınıların yalın bir akış içinde işlendiği monolitik bir müzikal anlatı sunar.

Program Notes:

“Conference of the Birds: Paris” is the fourth piece of the seven-piece cycle,
depicting a musical reproduction and abstraction of the mystical allegory used in Farid Ud-Din Attar's prose poem called the Mantiq-ut Tayr (Conference of the Birds).

Mantiq-ut Tayr, one of the masterpieces of Persian literature written in the 12th century, translates the doctrines and disciplines of Sufism into popular allegory. In the poem's allegorical narrative, a Hoopoe representing a Sufi master calls a conference to organize an expedition of birds to seek their god, the Simurgh. There are Seven Valleys to be crossed to reach the place of Simurgh's abode, and the journey across these valleys means facing great difficulties. Following the poem's flow, the city of Paris in the piece's title refers to The Valley of Detachment.

Based on Attar's narrative in the poem, the piece presents a monolithic structure preceded by a prologue of the birds consisting of limited, repetitive and birdlike
musical materials which illustrate the birds' seek for the Simurgh in the fourth valley.

“Melâli anlamayan nesle âşinâ değiliz.” diyen Haşim, kadını sadece madde olarak düşünen gününün insanlarını sevmemektedir. Çünkü onlar duygululuktan uzak durur, kadında bir güzellik, Haşim’de de şiir bulamazlar. Örtünme titreyişi içinde bulunan denizi de anlamazlar.
Anlamı için şiiri deşmenin, eti için bülbülü öldürmeye benzediğini düşünen Haşim, şiirde sese anlamdan daha çok önem verir, yeni ses alanları arar. Anlamı sınırlandırılmış bir alanda çeşitlendirerek güçlü tutarken, sembolist bir hüznü var etmek adına bulduğu ses alanlarındaki ışık oyunlarını ve izlenimlerini bizlere yansıtır.
Haşim’in “Göl Saatleri” üst başlığı ile anılan şiirleri bu ışık, renk ve ses oyunlarından bazılarının bana da aksetmesini sağladı.
Bu renksel ve sessel dünyanın oluşturduğu bağlam üzerinden düşünüldüğünde, bir izlenimin yansımasının yeniden üretimi olarak Mart 2019’da tamamlanan Aks-i Mülevven, viyolonsele ait bir grup rengin dinleyiciye yansıyışını araç edinerek tenebrist bir üslupla zamana çizilen bir ses resmi olarak karşımıza çıkar.

Uğurcan Öztekin (b. 1990) is a İstanbul-based composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music.

 First Prize winner of the 2019 Calefax Composers Competition for his piece, "Conference of the Birds: Amsterdam", Öztekin has been selected in numerous competitions such as the Festival Mixtur 2016 Commission Prize, Donaueschinger Musiktage 2017 Next Generation Call for Scores, Atlas Ensemble Composition Competition, Computer Space International Computer Art Forum’s Electronic Music Competition, 11th Pre-Art Composition Competition, and 4th Choral Composition Competition of Turkish Ministry of Culture.

His music has been performed in Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Germany, Montenegro, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom at concerts and festivals such as Donaueschinger Musiktage 2017, Festival Mixtur (Barcelona), Atlas Festival (Amsterdam), Barcelona Modern Festival, Festival Turbulences Sonores (Montpellier), Musica Electronica Nova (Wroclaw), International Composers Seminar in St. Petersburg Closing Concert (2017), ME_MMIX18 Festival Pirineus-Mediterrània Modern (Mallorca), Computer Space Computer Arts Forum (Sofia), Baroquestock Festival (London), Festival Unicum (Ljubljana) and Calgary New Music Festival.
