On November 17th 2013, Just a month after they collaborated to present the kickoff event for Mi Casa Holiday in beautiful Playa del Carmen Mexico, Uhuru Afrika and Funkbox joined forces once again, in NYC at (le) Poisson Rouge. Both well respected parties, with dedicated communities of dancers and music appreciators this evening was an explosion of eclectic dance music with Uhuru Afrika's Adam Gibbons accompanied by Malian Master percussionist Sidy Maiga. With Tony Touch out of town, DJ/Producer Adam Rios of Shelter held it down proper after Adam Gibbons to close out the night. This is a three hours set by Adam Gibbons and Sidy Maiga from that night. UhuruAfrika 2014 New Years Eve Mix

This set was recorded Live on September 27th 2013 at Uhuru Afrika in Boston, MA US on Djeff's Soldier Ascension Tour. It was recorded on an open mic as opposed to srtaight from the board so even though the audio quality is not impeccable, you can catch all of the energy from the room with cheers from the crowd and Sidy Maiga adding percussion. The recording starts out with Uhuru Afrika's Resident DJ Adam Gibbons warming up the crowd a bit before Djeff jumps in and takes the crowd home.  We have woven for you, a collection of some of the hottest Afro dancefloor shakers we would typically play at our events. In this mix, we start out with an etheral organ laden track by our friend Boddhi Satva who played our event in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico last October. It is an atmospheric track with hints of the poly-rhythmic sounds of the African Congo's Ituri Forest Pygmies which is not far from the Central Africa Republic, birthplace of Boddhi Satva. It sets the stage and bulds a foundation for what is to follow... a marriage of the organic... ancient... ancestral, and the present, electronic and infused with the spices of age and global influence. The story continues to travel through the continent, landing in South Africa for the next few tracks. The House music scene is HUGE in South Africa. When Adam Gibbons was there last summer, you would hear house music everywhere you went... blasting from cars, shops, carwashes, homes... it was un-escapable. House music to South Africa is what Hip-Hop and R&B is to the US. We feature a track here that showcases the vocal of the recently departed Busi Mhlongo. He voice is a beautiful and well loved sound to the South African music lover... singing in Zulu, not unlike a modern day Billie Holiday. We love playing Busi's Music! We build the energy of the mix adding more percussion initially a latin rhythm (born from the diaspora, or slave trade... founded in West African spiritual music of the Orishas) Produced by an ordained priest in the West African religion of Ifá, Osunlade. Who is also one of the hottest and highly sought after producers/remixers in our Genre today. As the mix continues, we build the energy and the story becomes more complex as we explore a sound that is changing from the traditional African to one infused with the music it has picked up from the Caribbean like the remix of the classic Celia Cruz song 'Eleggua', a celebration of the Orisha Eleggua. In the West African religious concept, Eleggua is the keeper of the gateway between the divine and material worlds and allows us to connect with our ancestors.  This track was remixed by Jose Marquez who will join us at the next Uhuru Afrika on June 11th. He kept the original fairly intact, honoring it while infusing it his signature modern dancefloor punch. After a furious gathering of energy, we break it down and dive deep into a remix of the Stimela track 'Turn on the Sun' by South African Producer/DJ Black Coffee who we had join us at Uhuru Afrika last year for our annual white party. The night he played with us, in absentia... he won 2 South African Music Awards. Their equivilant to a grammy. We continue with a few tracks another South African producer (duo) Black Motion and then another track by Boddhi Satva before we get into a nice groove with the track "Ijo" by Nigerian soul singer Siji who performed the track, along with some of his others live at Uhuru Afrika this past April. We continue this groove right into a Uhuru Afrika clasic tune 'Her Song' by the NYC based group 3 Generations Walking. We end this journey with the song 'Sorry Sorry' by Nigerian artist Femi Kuti, son of the late Fela Kuti. Creator of Afrobeat music. This poinient track (as the earlier track "Kuar" by Emmanuel Jal, reminds us that as we celebrate and dance and have fun listening/grooving/patrying to the music born from this rich continent, there is much pain and suffering there due to corruption, conflict, war, greed and western influence. It would be remiss of us to not concoiusly acknolege and honor the whole of the equation that makes up the music. It is not just music for music sake...  but a social, cultural and spiritual representation of a people manifested through rhythm. Uhuru Afrika is described as a “multi-sensory,” experience with a unique curation of Afro- rooted dance music. “Uhuru Afrika is a unique and powerful intersection of art and nightlife that challenges distinctions between the two.” –Boston Dig. 
The mission is to bridge ancient traditional African music and the electronic dancefloor sounds of today. Navigated by creator Adam Gibbons and his partner David Montoya, typically accompanied by Malian born master percussionist Sidy Maiga, Uhuru Afrika hosts artists from all over the world to perform at their events. Showcasing artists from LA to London as well as various African countries including South Africa, Mali, Angola and Nigeria. Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Hyenah, Zepherin Saint, Zaki Ibrahim, Siji, Djeff Afrozila are a few of the many international artists who have joined Uhuru Afrika for performances. Uhuru Afrika has also opened/ closed for multiple Grammy Award winners Oumou Sangaré(2x), Femi Kuti (3x), and co-creator of Afrobeat and ex Fela Kuti drummer, Tony Allen.
Uhuru Afrika has participated in festivals and events nationally and internationally including ADE in Amsterdam, Mi Casa Holiday in Playa del Carmen / Tulum in Mexico; Afrika Nyaga Drum and Dance Festival in Rhode Island; Bembe in Brooklyn, NYC;  Harvard University symposium on African Dance in the diaspora, to name a few.
