"The sound that kicks off this song, and the record, is the fluttering voice of Shara Worden combined with Chris Thile's tremolo mandolin. In order to create the vocal sound, I recorded Shara singing three short 'ah' sounds on every pitch in her range. I snipped them all up, and using a sampler, mapped them so that I could 'play' her voice from a keyboard. Then I used some fancy programming to make each 'ah' repeat as I hold down a key, or more specifically, to 'bounce' like a ball propelled by gravity... and then reverse itself. The result is that each 'ah' bounces rapidly and gradually smears into the next, creating the illusion of a held note, and then spreads out again. When 'playing' the voice this way, an extra-natural vocal articulation is achieved, but the sound of the instrument itself is entirely acoustic, and even human. This bit of technical geekery is a play on 'alternate world,' presenting the familiar in a strange new light." - Ryan Lott

About the track:
"I have a sweet spot in my heart for this song. White Lies is maybe the most archetypical Son Lux song on the record, to my ear. But lyrically, it feels different than anything we’ve done. Its initial flickers of life were fragments of recordings we made of Ian’s improvisations. The first was a tiny squeaking, rattling sound I discovered in one of the mic channels, which turned out to be his squeaking hi-hat pedal, combined with the sound of his keys on the floor next to his foot (I think!). A half year later, at the end of another take at another session, just before the engineer stopped recording, Ian threw his sticks down on his floor tom and started laughing. The gesture sounded amazing, so I grabbed that little piece of audio and it became an important aspect of the rhythmic texture of the song. A song emerged slowly from these kinds of unlikely, rather inauspicious seeds." - Ryan Lott

Reemerging in 2017 with four new tracks, Son Lux’s new EP 'Remedy' is the ferocious trio’s response to an ever-encroaching reality of social and political upheaval. Reflective but defiant, Ryan Lott, Ian Chang, and Rafiq Bhatia synthesize their signature unpredictable experimentation into an explosive examination of what it means to live, to create, and to resist in America today. These songs were born the week of the 2016 election, and they capture a band both mournful and refusing to accept the new normal. "How does it feel, to be your own deceiver," Lott whispers in our ears, just ahead of the steady approach of swarming, mechanized woodwinds and rising torrents of noise. "I watch you fall, hollow and depleted. A city razed/raised, to bury you beneath it.”

The EP's final statement is a plea, sung in unison with a crowd-sourced choir of more than 300 people. "Find your voice, in the sea of surging bodies and breath, to form a melody, to find a remedy."

In that spirit, Son Lux will donate all proceeds of the sales of 'Remedy' to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of American society.
