The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Earlier this month, the drum & bass legend that is DJ Marky announced details of his debut solo album, My Heroes. Comprised of 17 tracks, the album, which is set to be released on his Innerground label on 15th June, will feature an array of his notorious d&b funk, Brazilian flair and his trademark interlaced groovy percussion. 

It's a bit of an understatement to say that a full length transmission from Marky has been a long time coming - especially when you consider the fact that he’s been transcending the world’s dancefloors for over 25 years now. So it seemed only right that the selector and those affiliated with him would mark this wondrous occasion with an eagerly awaited launch party right here in Room One on Friday 12th June. In the run up to release he's not only been kind enough to give his faithful fans an insight into the making of the album by releasing an exclusive documentary, drip feeding teaser episodes each week but he's also given us the opportunity to enjoy another brand new and exclusive mix that he's put together "with love" to help stoke the coals of anticipation...

The View to Nowhere

Still widely saluted for his own inimitable take on the 170bpm spectrum, Danny Byrd is proving to still be one of the drum ‘n’ bass scene's most illustrious of players. His seductively soulful and seamlessly vocal laced productions have been some of the most forward thinking and anthemic cuts to come from the Hospital Records camp, releasing three studio albums and a fleet of EPs on the major imprint since the turn of the millennium. Lately, it seems he's been a little quiet on the studio front, having released his last EP for Hospital back in 2013, but the Bath-based producer has still been seemingly busy, reworking fresh jams from Stanton Warriors and dabbling in a string of festival and club dates, including an anticipated return to our own musical haunt this Autumn.

Set to link with Viper cohorts Brookes Brothers inside the booth for an exclusive back to back session as part of Viper Recordings' Room Two takeover, the legendary selector has taken some time to fuse together some of his favourite cuts by way of this 30 minute mix…
