When was the last time you listened to an actual ‘mixtape’? You probably think of one of the many mixes inhabiting our digital social spheres, which you might give a quick click or a fast listen. Dutch Drum and Bass connoisseurs Lenzman & Dan Stezo go back in time with the launch of their ‘Soul Tape’, an actual 60 minute cassette tape meant for the discerning Drum and Bass lover.

The Soul Tape is a limited give-away. The hand-crafted package comes in a hard-cover box, with additional T-shirt and a variety of stickers - all with custom artwork by Team Blazin'. Besides that The Soul Tape is a ‘cool’ and fresh (but hyper-traditional) take on the mix-format, it stems from Lenzman and Dan Stezo's 90s ritual of making Hiphop tapes for each other in school.

The Soul Tape exhibits tracks from the world’s finest Drum and Bass artists, blended by Lenzman with Dan Stezo’s narrative slang and distinct voice-over. As a combination they have worked together since 2003, and recently increased their collaborative spirit both on stage and on record. 2014 saw their first release ‘Move & Focus’ together as a combination on the esteemed Metalheadz imprint as part of Lenzman's debut album 'Looking At The Stars.

Lenzman’s tremendous success in his genre and his tour the force around the world doesn't keep him from maintaining a close circle. Long time confidant Team Blazin' adds the artwork in the form of handwritten calligraphy which articulates the Hiphop aesthetics, the three artists’ connecting factor and their shared stylistic background.

The Soul Tape is not for sale, as it is an initiative out of love for the craft, the music and their heritage. The 50 limited edition tapes will be given away to fans over a period of time. As it's holiday season, starting with 10 units via a Facebook “Share to Win” competition. Head over to the Metalheadz Facebook page and you might win a copy of The Soul Tape.

“When we were kids growing up it was all about tapes. It was a time where music was hard to come by and albums were played from start to finish, over and over... It was also a time where we made mixtapes for each other, recorded off CD, radio, whatever. Back then it was Hiphop. We are taking that aesthetics and giving you a piece of nostalgia which celebrates the love for our craft. We've made you a mixtape. This time it's not Hiphop but Drum and Bass music. This a hard-crafted package: 50 slices of nostalgia. Inside you will find a 60 minute tape, mixed and hosted by Lenzman and Dan Stezo. Drumsound & Bassline Smith are one of the most significant acts in drum 'n' bass. Their foundations were built in the very earliest days of rave, and their productions have never lost that pioneering spirit. Bridging the gap between the underground and mainstream, able to smash the biggest festival stages while still able to rinse it out for the aficionados, they've proven their status time and time again. And, now, they've got a a brand new album for us, “Wardance”. The first single, “Come With Me”, is already shutting down dances everywhere and stormed to the top of the DnB charts, so the follow-up comes loaded with anticipation.

This time, we're being treated to the LP's title track, and it's clear that Drumsound & Bassline Smith aren't playing. “Wardance” opens in a dark, forbidding landscape of unsettling scythe-swings of synth-brass and dissonant pads. It all blatantly signifies approaching danger. As gritty, grimed-up orchestral stabs fill the atmosphere, and chest-crushing sledgehammer kick drums build, it's time for ravers to find their space on the floor. We already know this one's going to be weighty.

The drop has Drumsound & Bassline Smith's name written all over it. Whiplash strikes of kick and snare, supported by the rolling breaks that have always featured in their work, keep it moving. Insistently sustained waves of bassline, and those electric-charge modulations to mark out the ends of phrases, drive the energy onwards. This one's going to be a deejay's weapon of choice across the sub-genre divisions. Tech, rollers, jump-up, however a selector classifies themselves, they're going to want this on their USB for when it's rave-destruction time.

It might only be the second taste we've had of the “Wardance” album, but this release, combined with “Come With Me”, demonstrates that Drumsound & Bassline Smith are at the top of their game. Of course, there's the scientific production technicality born of long years of experience, but that's not all that's on offer. These producers add an intimate understanding of how to bring vibes to a dancefloor. Essentially, these singles tell us that the album is going to be absolutely lethal.
