There hasn't been a rise to notoriety quite like that of Hospital Records' seminal signee, S.P.Y. After making a huge impact on the drum & bass circuit with his debut album, What The Future Holds, back in 2011, the studio dynamo is once again showcasing his unparalleled production skills with his two part follow up LP, Back To Basics (Part One of which was released earlier this year). Taking a slightly darker direction this time around, the records been split into two parts, a process which according to S.P.Y was the only way to trim back a 70 track strong catalogue of music he had earmarked for it. . 

So, with a only a couple months before he releases the second chapter, we grabbed an exclusive new mix and caught up with the Brazilian producer to chat about the project as a whole and the forthcoming record and what to expect come August 1st when he’ll touch down in Room One alongside London Elektricity, Source Direct and Lenzman for the album launch...

The 70th SUNANDBASS Podcast comes from DJ, producer, and Spearhead label head BCee.

Having released over 100 tracks and remixes over 4 albums, and countless other releases since his debut in 2002, it’s fair to say that BCee has made a huge contribution to the Drum & Bass scene. 

Alongside this epic body of work, his label Spearhead continues to grow from strength to strength, having bought artists such as SPY, Technimatic, Hybrid Minds and LSB, amongst countless others to the fore. 

BCee brings something a bit special to this month’s SUNANDBASS Podcast, with a mix of only his music – whether his originals, remixes of his tracks or tracks that he has remixed. Instruments make melodies, drums make rhythms, but it is the voice that brings all these elements to life to create MUSIC.
“As Eduard Hanslick wrote in 1854 in On the Musically Beautiful,

Instrumental music is one art form in which form and content are indistinguishable. We can never say, with total confidence, what a particular musical phrase is "about", because the "musical idea" (as Hanslick calls the melody and rhythm) is not "about" anything. A Manet painting of a picnic is About the picnic. The beauty of instrumental music seems to come not from outside itself but from within.

And yet though utterly intangible this invisible art reaches places in the heart and mind that nothing else can touch. It is indeed a very mysterious medicine, especially for those who  want concrete explainations of how things work, in a culture that often favors the visual over the acoustic, and where "seeing is believing." What is heard is often suspect; the voice is transitory; people speak dismissively of "hearsay" and scoff that "talk is cheap." Sound exists momentarily in the ether, while for many, "the real," "truth," and "lasting proofs" are what can be seen physically, concretely. We like our proofs visible, like those of geometry, which literally demonstrates it's truths pictorially.
Yet regardless of the culture we are born into, we all begin life in darkness, and we do our most substantial growth within it. Our first contact with existence is enclosed within the vibrations of our mother's heartbeat, the tide of her breathing, and the music of her voice, it's melody and rhythm, even without knowing the meaning of her words. Such longing as this engenders remains with us forever.” -The Brain's Way of Healing p. 352

Music is absolutely a medicine for the mind, body, and soul which, in truth, are all one.

Someone once said, "Art is how we decorate space and music is how we decorate time", and I agreed.
I might be too uncommon to have common sense.
We were given the gift of choice and what did we choose?
My body is in Washington, my heart is in the forest and my mind is in the Jungle.
Subconsciously mixing the soundtrack of my life in my head.
