Most people are unaware that shots were fired across Africa from 1914 and throughout WW1. The following nations were involved: Kamerun, Togoland, SW Africa, East Africa, Morocco, Libya, Egypt, what became Burkina Faso, Niger, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Rohdesia, Uganda, Congo, Nyasaland, what became Tanzania, Tanganyika and Ghana. The African piece, written by Leisa Rea & George Hinchliffe, is based on a traditional theme, serves to remind us of them all.

West Africa

The song “Wild Geese” is taken from the orchestra's show "When This Lousy War is Over"

Published in 1917 by poet Walter Flex in his collection “In the (battle) field between day and night”, it became a song popular in the hiking movement “Wandervogel” just after WW1. The song was also popular in the French army as "Les Oies Sauvages" and was used by the French Foreign Legion.

Walter Flex died in battle on the Eastern Front in 1917, in what is now Estonia. The song, with its melody by Robert Götz, serves to remind us that while we might be familiar with the works of war casualties Wilfred Owen and George Butterworth, there were war poets and composers on both sides of the lines.
