We instantly feel in love with the Squanto sound from way back in early 2012 when Ben sent over an early demo for what is now known as 'Every Night Draws the Same Crowd'. We knew this was going to be a very special album, and one that has been close to our heart...

The photographic prints that come with the album are taken from a trip to North Wales (Snowdonia National Park). This location was always in Dan's mind for the album... The beauty and mystery that encapsulates Snowdonia seemed the perfect fit for the Squanto sound so off we went in the van with camera in hand.

Squanto is Ben Lovell from New York. Ben has been releasing his home-recorded experimental folk music on small-run CD-Rs and tapes since 2009, primarily on his own Lily Tapes & Discs, but also on other labels including Rok Lok Records, Diving Station, and now Fluid Audio.

This album was written and recorded 2011-2013 between bedrooms at school and at home, inspired and informed by long aimless walks through familiar neighborhoods in the dark, trying to pretend that eventually there would be something different behind the houses.

Music by Ben Lovell, drums on "To the Grid and Back" by Sean Kelly. Thanks to everyone in Rochester and LI and everywhere else for your friendship and support, and thanks to Dan for making this release possible.

In the vast world of electronic music, where sounds, signifiers and gesture's are recontextualized to a numbing degree it is increasingly rare and refreshing to encounter a release as perspective distorting as the debut full length release by Rashad Becker.  The album is a masterpiece of focussed non-referential electronic environments.  It is is both warm, alien, paranoid and exhilarating.  Sounds are stretched in the most unusual manner, foreign bodies are frequent and the structure is simply bewildering.  Split into 'Themes and Dances', the 8 tracks guide the listener through Becker's brave new world.  Despite being entirely synthetic there are sounds which appear like a distortion of the world around us, on occasion 'voice-like' sounds are present, elsewhere there appears the sound of cicada's, only these cicada's are made of mercury and swim through time.

For five months, director Peter Nicks embedded himself and his crew in the emergency room of Highland Hospital, a large public hospital located in Oakland, Calif., and filmed the hundreds of patients who entered the facility every day in need of care, as well as the overburdened staff of nurses and doctors attempting to deliver quality treatment in difficult conditions. The Waiting Room turns Highland’s ER into its own self-contained universe and keeps its focus entirely on the men and women who populate it. It’s a small-scale story that -- captured through Nick's intimate and transparent lens -- speaks volumes about the larger problems facing American healthcare. The emergency room is understaffed and underfunded but the film is remarkably policy-free. There are no title cards or celebrity voice overs, no calls for action, no heavy-handed visual or musical cues suggesting the audience laugh or cry. The footage alone is enough.  

For original soundtrack composition, Nicks chose an up-and-coming film composer and producer William Ryan Fritch, Fritch, an Oakland resident, has composed for dozens of award-winning Independent narrative and documentary films (The Myth of the American Sleepover, Leave Me Like you Found Me, The Stinking Ship, Days Together, etc.), released several records under his own name and the moniker Vieo Abiungo, and arranges and produces music for a cadre of other artists. The common thread running throughout these diverse projects is their high-altitude clarity: singing upper registers, buzzing lows, and natural reverberations. 

Fritch’s Waiting Room soundtrack is the ideal complement, with persistent gravities and thudding tempos that are keenly aware of the passing hours.  The crawl of time is transcribed to sound with prolonged string notes, potent repetition and exquisite silences between topographies. While the singsong melodies, diverse instrumentation,  and acoustic nuance parallel the colorful and multi-faceted community the film surrounds. The soundtrack is textured and resonant, cinematic in both senses of the word: its impact is visual as well as aural, and the impact is pulse-quickening, exhilarating.  But the duality of homogenous and heterogeneous is the most striking: Fritch’s uncountable instruments begin to resemble a sea of faces, like those Nicks has documented, waiting for emergency care.  Diverse when viewed from up close, but cohesive in the end, their colors and timbres spilling together when seen as a whole.

From the hesitant, ringing “Any and All Of Us” to the symphonic title score, Fritch has produced twelve decisive movements. Many listeners will find this soundtrack to be the high point of an already accomplished career: a clear thematic statement, an intriguing metaphor for the state of public health care, and yet another delivering, transcendent work of art.

As of press time, Peter Nick was awarded the Independent Spirit Awards “Truer Than Fiction” filmmaking grant for his work on The Waiting Room, and the  film has received more than its share of awards and recognition, the San Francisco Film Critics Circle award for Best Documentary, and a place on the Academy Awards shortlist for Best Documentary.  NPR listed The Waiting Room among their “10 Films Worth Going Out Of Your Way For,” and the Washington Post named it “one of the 10 best films of 2012”. Titled here simply as "Interlude", it's a strange and somber anomaly in a typically festive genre not known for evocations of reflective melancholy. To be honest, I've been trucking around this dusty, otherwise unremarkable thrift-scrounged Barbados Steel Drums LP for well over a decade, simply unable to toss it out due to the oddball beauty of this one track. Its a crackly old thing by now, but maybe better that way...

Barbados Steel Drums - Interlude (Moonlight Sonata)

This E.P took a while to sort out. Franklin wanted all new Mudkid goodness, I have been wanting to see Hash Hash & When the Mud Falls on vinyl since they came out digitally, first time around a few years back... In the end a compromise was reached! 6 tracks, 4 on vinyl. Enjoy.

The heart melting, floor obliterating grooving beast When the Mud Falls is held with high regard in the GC stables. Solidly built on a foundation of fat tuned kicks, curly sub and an uncompromising tour de force piano spiral. Effervescently ethereal, bringing on vague recollections of 80s high-end synth led kosmische production. A powerhaus of monumental proportions.

Fulltime Volldepp is a sizable lump of gathering rhythms converging to form tense build ups. Shuffling away psyche inducing sentiments with a cataclysmic crescendo, A2 aids the thoughtful dancefloor massive in futuristic disco dancing.

Hash Hash has been a staple part in the Workshops diet since way back, finally seeing the light of day on a thickly cut 180g. Cloud like deep house maneuvers bump and grind, providing existential feelings with no remorse or care. They strut their stuff with light claps and flailing keys to make melancholy merriment.

Driving emotive Brownswitch picks slick Detroit chords to induce otherworldly fondness. With muffled claps for supreme furious styles and space age affections eventually reaching a heightened hypnosis, Rocketship funk of the highest order this is… the inside etch says it all really.

The first of the Digi pair, Big Daddy is Mudkid in full soundtrack mode, lurking & skulking on the moody downlo, Still fizzing with energy and life force, soothing flipped with darkness, an afterhours slow burn.

Closing out the show, Future Girl will stand you back on your feet for one last dubbed out flex in the reverb wash. Kick drums ride over metallic clangs and rubber bass muscle. Set up a System in a field, call your mates, add Future Girl and stay up all night.
