Treading The Waves 踏浪

today i was working on some sounds for a new installation piece that stephen vitiello and i are working on. i'm creating sounds through long reverbs and delays and capturing the tail ends of them.

when i was setting up a microphone in the studio today this sound started happening because the mic was facing the monitors. this is feedback between the mic and monitor going through an eventide h7600.

While lamenting the demise of the really long indulgent ambient remixes of days gone by I decided to do one myself. 
The bank holiday was holding to tradition with the rain steadily falling so I wired up a new configuration of my ridiculous drone machine and set about it.  This is a 10 minute extract from a 30 minute session sequenced in one take. The noise of the rain and the road outside layered in.

I'll go back and mixdown and tweak the long session into around 20 minutes of self indulgent ambient but for now I hope you enjoy this "little" slice.

tonight's sound is definitely a process-driven affair. i had an idea in my head and wanted to see it out, regardless of the outcome. it wasn't terribly complex but something i've been meaning to try.

this is another modular sound and the patching goes something like this:

verbos harmonic oscillator
pitch being sequenced by a turing machine that's being clocked from a bubblesound uLFO
4 individual sine waves out to the 4 inputs of an intellijel planar
eowave lfo modulating x and y axes of planar to crossfade between the 4 sine waves
mix out of planar going into a make noise phonogene, being looped
dry and loop output going into an intellijel uVCF bandpass filter being modulated by an e355 LFO which in turn is having it's speed being modulated by a sine wave following the clock rate.
everything is going through an ALM SBG which feeds an eventide H9 reverb.

some interesting things i think. it's sounding too harsh for me. i wonder what it would be like with some intellijel sine waves, from a dixie or a rubicon (neither of which i have, yet) which are really beautiful. i find the verbos sines to be a bit aggressive sometimes. i haven't fully explored why or a way around it.
