The Enchanted Forest

In Hephaestus' ancient forge,
where the demiurge now emerges,
we step on forgotten ground,
where we're healed of our wounds.

A strange brew in our veins,
through archaic, mystic chains,
used by the ancient shamans,
to break the mind's domains.

Slender origami leaves dance,
the wind plays a sweet romance.
Feeble chants from the tree of life
Awaken my soul to bright new life.

In Kamaloka, desires are felt,
shedding the existential veil.
Through voids separating stars,
I glimpse the pyramids of Mars.

There it is-again
Amber, maybe orange
Half-hearted warning, not urgent, not bored
Blink, gone
Hey, it's back
A flicker, a wink, a mechanical tic
or maybe it's just shy
Could be the sun
Could be
A reflection of something I forgot

So, I pop the hood
Poke around with the wrong end of a spoon
Jiggle a cable
(a confident nod to no one)
Check the cap, pat the battery
whisper: "You okay?"
The engine stares at me
deadpan, unimpressed
like a doctor at my annual checkup
who's just found my browser history

Google says: "Loose gas cap"
Grandpa says: "Spirit trapped inside"
Mechanic says, "That's normal for this model"
I nod
Pretend I know what normal is
Pretend the light cares

The light is on
and off
and on
Maybe it's my signal
Maybe it's Morse code
Maybe it's love
or low-grade cosmic threat
I blink twice
It blinks back
Who's warning who here?

Maybe the car is lonely
craving existential meaning
Maybe it's asking for therapy
or more podcasts
or a different kind of fuel
Maybe it needs to talk
about its childhood

My neighbor says, "It's the universe
giving you a sign"
My barista says
"You need a vacation"
My phone suggests a playlist called
"Songs for Unexplained Warning Lights"
(Now that's suspicious)

The light is on
and so am I
Lying awake at 2 am
googling symptoms I don't have
Maybe I'm the check engine
Maybe I'm the one
blinking
on and off
hoping someone's paying attention

What if the light's for the things I can't fix?
What if it's grief
or taxes
or unfinished novels?
Is there a scanner
for existential dread?
Can I tighten my soul with a twist of a cap?
Do I need premium dreams?
Or just more air in the metaphorical tires?

The light is on
Don't know what it means
Maybe I'm warning myself
Maybe I'm the mystery
the dashboard blinking
the unresolved riddle
rolling downhill
engine running
mind humming
watching for smoke
that never comes

The light is on
I'll keep driving
Maybe it'll turn off
Maybe I will
Maybe that's all we ever get
A sign we can't read
and a road that doesn't care

The Light Is On

Pure of Heart was created during a study session with Nizaar Khan from India (Jodpur - Rajasthan) at my Bergtonstudio. A little jubilation outside the work on an album by Nizaar and me for a meditative world music fusion of Indian traditional elements and the intuitive music of with in the spirit of Markus Stockhausen. This piece is a fusion of traditions from Afghanistan (my frame drum) and the Sarod (played with virtuosity by Nizaar). A piece of pure being and pure of any differences in the cultures. From the book: graham wood - tycho's nova (a tomato project, 2001) comes a paragraph worth to be made into a tune. The first three lines are: "The man stops for a meal at a dark roadside cafe. He walks in, shown to a table by a big man with a blonde wig. He is neat, wearing a white uniform with red epaulets and gold buttons." 
The lyrics got build from these lines (and the remains of the paragraph). Have a listen ...

Not, and this marks its artistic profile, not additively, "side by side". Ullip combines these functions in order to let a new something emerge from them. CDs whose tracks do not preserve and reproduce "played music" as is usually the case. But CDs where the music is created by editing, mixing and recording it "on the fly". The CD as an audience, so to speak. With the great advantage that - in contrast to live sessions - one can enjoy the cuts of the CDs over and over again.
Based on a rich musical experience and an almost "wild" past, Ullip - together with other musicians - has today found a style that activates and inspires a special genre:

'Chained music'.

Sounds and pieces, music and rhythms that are played in a self-inspiring way or created on technical devices. Born in the moment, just like jazz. Also, not only as in jazz, given as a theme, otherwise improvised. Above all, they are not reproductions in the sense of notated notes. All the elements that stand between the first beat and sound of a live gig, a studio recording and the final burning process on a CD are interlinked to create what the "piece" recorded on silver discs ultimately is.
