8, 16 bit [Sound/Protracker, Starkos, OpenMPT], Demoscene and other

These musics deserve a separate set for their size does not exceed 1.2-1.3 kb ziped. To make them hearable I rendered them as standard audio file formats like .ogg. But, this is not the way we usually play them. For these musics are part of executable programs (.exe) that execute real time visual animations. To create them, one must use either a soft synth playing midi instruments ([at]lx of FRequency did such a midi++ synth that offered the possibility to add delay and general reverb; play the "retro" or "potatro":-) or soft synths from which you have to create your own instruments (e.g. 4klang that we used for the "ergon"). Soft synths of that kind can be imported as VSTi into your DAW, Renoise here. I did these musics with [at]lx, the best arranger ever :), as a member of FRequency, a team in the demo scene (http://frequency.fr/). In making these musics with [at]lx I was more involved in finding some leading melodies while [at]lx composed the arpegiato, synth basses and strings :). Sometimes he starts the track ("Ergon") or I start the track ("Potatro", "Raytro"). Needless to say that as a musician-only I always find difficult to cut musical details that only me can hear :D. Fortunately, [at]lx or  XT95 in the case of "Raytro" were there to tell me that I had no other choice than cutting! Scenemon [for Joy-inn's Scenemon game], 2012

I release "Introsong" for the first time. I did it in 1990, just before the Summer of 1990 where I was invited to do official songs for Explora III, a game edited by a French company. Although it is different, "Introsong" was inspired by a well known game, "Giana Sister".

A cool and slow music I did in 1991 with a 8 bit electro piano lead. The tempo is 132 with 4 lines per ber beat.

In 1990, I did this tune with Soundtracker on my Amiga. My aim was to do a high tempo music, There are about 180 beats per minute and 4 lines per beat or 136 BPM with 8 LPB. I think this music is very oldschool. Spacing the notes and using an elevated tempo was very standard in Demoscene musics. I dit a little use of the trick in my tunes but this one. Part of it was inspired by https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=27909.

One [dynamic electro beat, a break demoish], 1990

Another 8-bit music done in 1991 or 1992?! Soundtracker's speed is 6 and the tempo 125. Most samples are from the st01 sample disk. I applied some effect on them with protracker v1.1b. One instrument was sampled from my Yamaha dsr2000, the "alien" sound.

r_ready? [in Soundtracker], 1991

In 1991, I did this cover of what is to me one of the greatest futurist tunes: "The Art of Sampling" from the "one and only one 1990's album of Robotiko Rejekto, "The Cyber Space", produced by RaHen together with Kurt Ader (using the synonym Ramona). "Great" tune means that when one speaks about computer generated music, futurist music, all these Robots things, I can hardly see a music so representative as this one. But, to do it with four channel was a big challenge. I regret that the sound is not more punchy. But just turn the volume up, add some loudness, or simply listen to this tracked work done by the young trackerboy I was in the 1990's :p.

In 1991, with Soundtracker, or Protracker; I can't remember now. Tempo was 125 and speed 6. It uses a couple of the late DSR2000 Yamaha keyboard :).

Speed machine [Pro-Tracker, Amiga], 1991

This one I made it in 1990 for the excellent Space Depth demo by ACE (now xoofx, and ex-[at]lx) who also helped me with giving more brillance to the snare and bass. It was released in September 1990: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEPPbj3prYE. I did not used used a clear separation between the verse and the chorus. It does not include the melodic parts usually incorporated in my ziks. When I listen to "Ergon" that xoofx started to compose at the same time as the intro (see in my "2007--" set in my SNDCLD page, I find the same mood, dark with little shiny parts, well, epic?!)

Some people discover the song through The Last of Us series which, to be honnest, I've never seen. However it is an opportunity to publish this tune I did in 1990 with Soundtracker on Amiga. I used two sample banks (floppy disks at the time) : ST-01 and ST-05. This is a boring cover, unless you're willing to sing on it, and in case you're an awful singer like me, there is an instrument playing Gahans's vocal. This is very old fashion but something we did in the past, replacing the vocal with some instrument.

À propos de ce son : le fruit d'un recyclage musical. Je m'explique : je ne fais plus de synthé depuis des lustres, car plus trop de place, et de temps pour pianoter. J'utilise le laptop du bureau, je prends mes sons pas finis (celui-ci est de 2015), je pioche des samples un peu partout (Trap Piano Killaz samples bank @futureloops cette fois-ci pour les mélodies + superbe voix de Cecilia) et je les mélange dans Audacity, comme un peintre impressionniste. Mon DAW préféré depuis ce temps. Cet environnement minimal est peu consommateur d'énergie.

Ranked 6/9, not so bad !!!
I started this track with as aim to submit it to atparty. Regarding the space'ish mood, I had a long sample of Nasa crew having a disussion with Alan Shepard which I did not know how to use until I heard about the US atparty demo party. I sampled the parts relevant for the music I had in mind. This track is less melodic than those I did in the past, perhaps a natural response to my intention to apply glitch effects using Glitch VST and following an IDM style a la kaneel. Some sceners but kaneel (:D) to whom I made listen earlier versions disliked it a bit, while others adding that this is a bit not very a la mode. I took pleasure in making this track which is all what matters.

At the end of the 1980s, a few pioneers paved the way for Amiga tracked musics. Greetz to 'em and to Ramon B5^DESiRE for giving me the opportunity to contribute to Chip Chop #17. Due greetings also go to xoofx for his insights on .mod sample rates, bexxx & Hepterida who give a breath of life to FRQ. Do you like anagrams? By removing "e," the anagram of Machineras is ... The tune uses samples from several sources: Audacity tone generator, Loopmasters' Coin-op Chiptune, st-65 `chipsyn' and a sample from `Part-3-snd.mod' by Steel Hertz.

This song is also dedicated to my dad who passed away in 2009. There is a bit of a melody he used to sing in it.

"FFF" was originally a jingle for DemoJS, a demoparty focused on webgl productions and Sponsored by Mozilla Labs among others. Then wullon who co-organized the party suggested TriGrou to make an intro which this jingle could accompany. Original song is by French punk band Bérurier Noir. The group became the spokesperson for part of the youth, notably through a variant of their song "Porcherie", whose chanted refrain became famous: "The National Front pisses the youth off". This statement expresses the frustration of young people toward the National Front, a political party that won the European election in France in 2024. (No) Radioactivity - Kraftwerk [w./ xtrium | Rebels demo @VIP], 2012

Music of "Cold Awakening" http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=59698 4k intro coded by nnorm and released by NTeam & FRequency at Evoke 2012 (Evoke website http://www.evoke.eu/2012/). I put a bit of compression then eq. The story behind this 1.3kb-compressed 4klang song is the following: as far as I remember, xtrium started the original version of it in 2010 where it was supposed to enter a 16kb intro or more: ftp://ftp.evens-salies.com/public/www/Zik/mandelbox_4.mp3
I reworked it a bit, but we never found an opportunity to release it, until nnorm of NTeam, contacted xtrium to ask whether we could make a music for his future intro. xtrium linked nnorm to me, which I considered as an opportunity to rework and release his song because I always have thought it is a good one. The problem was to make it small enough without altering it too much. I removed a couple of instruments and optimized it in the usual way: have a small number of patterns/measures but spread them so as to make the listener believe the song is not much repetitive. Perhaps I'll write more about this some times.

The Hit - Jordi Moragues (ulrick & xoofx loop; Amiga), 1992

- I did this tune in December 2008 with Starkos, a tracker for Amstrad which I used with an emulator on PC. It is thus a 3-track zik, hihi! Rouquemoute of FRequency included it in his Amstrad intro for the demoscene (http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=56789), but the rendering of the intro into video produced wrong slides.
- It is a cover of "Sound Position", a previous tune I did on Amiga in 1991 (here on soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/ulrick/sound-position).
- Well, why did I call it "unitroot"? Because I wanted to give it a new name for the demo, and "unit roots" sounds good; it is a subject I have been studying as a student in statistics.
- My wife said this zik sounds a bit like music from Japanese movie series, like "san ko kai". Okay Wife, +1.

- Working with xoofx on this prod was a very enjoyable activity. The true story is that I started a music which he did not like very much, for it did not reflect the dark mood that he wanted in "ergon". He thus composed a few patterns using a dark/sad musical scale. I entered into the music very easily and added my own stuffs. For the anecdote, I added a second scale to the music to allow for a happier break. After doing so, we realized that our music actually used the chromatic scale on E.

Year: 1990.

This zik was included in one of the Artefact demo, made by IRIS in 1990. 

Its original name is "Newwaveeve2", which made sense yet in 1990. The New Wave movement began to fade out a bit soon after. But I was 19 in 1990, and the New Wave movement was the one who was played most in clubs and thus which inspired me most to do my own musics. New wave musics particularly relied on two-octave bass variations, such as C3-C4-C3-C4, D#3-D#4-D#3-D#4, G#2-G#3-G#2-G#3, A#2-A#3-A#2-A#3.... 

All samples came from the st-01.

Taxi Girl `ChercheZ le garçon' [ulrick & Morusque glitch remix], 2014

You know what disco sounds like. But, have you already heard a cricket in a disco music? More particularly when this music is a bit demoscene oriented? There you are! In this music, you'll hear one synthetic sound of cricket (actually, a "grillon" as one says in French). This sound was made by Morusque by bending circuits. One vocoded vocal sample is from the Computer Music's "24bit Digital Lover Samples" pack.

This is our second collaboration. The previous one was "Mezon" that is available on my page too.

Amiga Soundtracker modules since 1989, and more recent ziks made with Renoise, VSTi + samples, Audacity, OpenMPT, Starkos. Most tracks up to 1994 were composed as I was member of IRIS demoscene group. A few tracks for video game "Explora III" on Amiga and Atari ST in 1990, and a couple of tracks for game "scenemon" for Android in 2012. Since 2007, I composed tracks for FRequency demoscene group (see pouet.net), more recently with MoonShine and other tracks for a larger audience.
