With previous releases on Origo Sound and Beatservice Records, Norwegian duo Circular signs here a strong and highly anticipated fourth album. [ Substans ] unfolds as a collection of micro ambient tales, journeys into intricate and multi-layered soundscapes. The band thought this album as a sonic line tangent to realms as opposite as floating atmospherica and industrial clunks; a deep kaleidoscopic glide through reverberated guitar riffs, uplifting grooves and environmental ambient. 
Ardent ISDN enthusiasts will notice the impression Future Sound Of London's avant-garde electronica left on Bjarte Andreassen and Jostein Dahl Gjelsvik. Indeed the band claims influences as diverse as Biosphere, Boards of Canada, Sun Electric and saw this album as one opportunity to acknowledge landmarks in their history of music encyclopaedia. 

Moreover, [ Substans ] reveals the work of a collective of photographers and designers. The artists joined by Christin Vaag, Torje Bjellås, Øyvind Veberg and Christoffer Furnes reflected on the album echoes in the vast Scandinavian territories.

This Road Trip album surfaces from pure Ambient Electronica to deliver undulating Downtempo, inviting curvy basslines and morphing cadences to meddle with crafty rhythms, airy pads and rich modular tweaks.

A powerful, shorter dance around the medicine wheel, honouring the directions and gaining wisdom and balance from embodying the elementals, we start briefly with ether, then we progress to some earth trance shaking for release & invigoration before starting with fire in the south, and moving in the direction of the sun in the southern hemisphere journeying east to air; north to earth; west to water; and lastly within and all around back to ether - the mystical plasma that integrates all elements yet cannot be sensed with the senses, yet without it light & sound waves could not travel through space.  This is for all the dancers in lockdown needing a dance of balance, centredness and ultimately, peace and calm. Derived from the Latin “Ultimae Terrae,” meaning “the furthest places,” the name Ultimae reflects a profound theme of exploration. This concept is at the heart of Ultimae Records, an ambient music record label and publisher dedicated to transporting listeners to the outer edges of experience through sound and offering a space for introspection and discovery within the vastness of the mind and beyond.

In 1999, Vincent Villuis and Sandrine Gryson, also known as AES Dana and Mahiane, united over a shared passion for the immersive world of electronic music. This collaboration led to the birth of the label. Initially envisioned as a musical portal, Ultimae’s mission was to explore and disseminate the diverse expressions of Ambient music far and wide through the production of records and the establishment of an online shop.

Over the years, Ultimae has expanded beyond its original scope, evolving into a multifaceted company with sound design, post-production, and mastering studios based in Lyon, France, along with professional services in publishing, music licensing, and synchronization.
