Ultramajic goes for the jugular with the second chapter of its Metaphysix series after Aden and Creepy Autograph's first installment won over many new hearts in 2013 (particularly with the much-buzzed about "Whip") while keeping existing acolytes very happy.

Inspired in equal parts by legends of early Detroit music and arcane philosophical-religious concepts, these are savage drum tracks slimmed down to their meanest and leanest states - dance music at an elemental level, pure rhythmic bliss that would do past drum machine wizards like Plastikman very proud while sitting nicely alongside modern operations like Night Slugs' Club Constructions series. It's no surprise, then, that Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 makes an appearance here under his Dance System alias with the rugged "RZ1", effortlessly bridging the gap between forward UK styles and vintage Detroit soul. Matrixxman steps up to the plate in a big way with the hard drum rolls of "Simulation" and two different incarnations of the jacking, rimshot-crazy "Stop It". Creepy Autograph is back for his second appearance in the Metaphysix series with a ferocious remix of "Simulation" while Lando (formerly Lando Kal) rounds things out with "Loveplay", adding soulful vox and bouncing synths to the machinelike motif.

All in all this a lethal set of no-frills, drum machine-inspired workouts that demonstrate the "less is more" maxim with sterling results, revealing each artist to be a virtuoso of rhythm and Edgar to be a consummate curator. Complete with magickal cover art by Jimmy Edgar and Pilar Zeta reportedly made while traveling in Egypt, there is indeed much magic to be mesmerized by here.

METAPHYSIX: III, CORRESPONDENCE

The third law of Metaphysix is titled Correspondence, which refers to a universal law that states “as above so below, and vice versa"—in other words, the universe is a fractal, and it's all connected. In this series, we look at the relationship and musical connection between Paris and Ultramajic.  We invited our close friends to take part of this compilation, and we also have a new artist joining the ranks: Crystal Bandito. 

This is the Ultramajic correspondence: Five ostensibly disparate producers from around the world translating similar musical ideas through cultural barriers. Label boss Jimmy Edgar finds a common ground with French talents Bambounou, French Fries, and Bobmo in rigid Chicago-influenced drum workouts, dusty drum hits, and staccato blasts. The two mysterious names on the track list, on the other hand—Aden and Crystal Bandito—offer a massive stomper with chunky hip-hop vocals and a unhinged techno tune with rashes of metallic percussion, respectively.

Jack Bags brings a nostalgic yet fresh flavor to the dance floor with "Molise Chicago," featured on Kulture Galerie’s latest release. A tribute to both the Italian region of Molise and the legendary Chicago house scene, this track is an analogue Acid House gem that sits comfortably within a collection of eclectic and innovative sounds. With a nod to the origins of the genre, Jack Bags manages to create a track that fuses geographical and sonic influences, honoring the past while pushing forward.

"Molise Chicago" is anchored by a deeply resonant Acid bassline, an essential element of classic Chicago House. The 303's squelching synth lines lead the way, evoking memories of the raw, minimalistic energy that defined early house music in the 1980s. The track, however, is not merely a rehash of old ideas but rather a homage reimagined with a contemporary edge. The rhythm section follows Filippo MSM's taste for "non straight forward drum patterns," creating an intricate structure that feels both unpredictable and deeply rhythmic.

Jack Bags cleverly intertwines these house roots with a sense of atmospheric melancholy, possibly reflecting the quieter, rural charm of Molise, Italy. The moody melodies and subtle, hypnotic pads sweep across the soundscape, adding depth and dimension to the driving acid elements. It's an all-analogue production, which shines through in the warmth and depth of the sound. The analogue textures add to the track's authentic feel, harkening back to the hardware-driven production techniques of the original Chicago house pioneers.

"Molise Chicago" is a masterful blend of influences, paying homage to the birthplace of Acid House while injecting it with fresh ideas and a distinct mood. Jack Bags manages to bridge the gap between two places — geographically and musically — with a track that feels timeless yet rooted in the present. This is a standout piece in Kulture Galerie’s latest V/A and a must-listen for fans of Acid House and those with an appreciation for both the old-school and the new wave of electronic music production.
