This DJ-Set is an attempt to create an „acoustic vivarium“ via Traktor, tapedeck, OP-1, loopstation.
The lifeforms in this imitated sonorous scenery acting swarmlike or separatly, moving unstable and enunciate with each other and sometimes by animalesque or humanesque mimed voices to the world outside of this synthetic habitat.

Discarded and strewn about, forgotten, dusty and old. 
They are presented here, together & hermetically sealed, instead of being eternally lost in the ether. 
A hommage to all things haunted. A candle for our ghosts of the past.
Footprints in a boundless terrain.

Guitar processed through cassette tapes and eurorack modular system.

In The Shine Of The Lamp

Maths Balance Volumes follow up their acclaimed 2020 release A Year Closer with a further and sturdier bucket of songs scraped from the dust of being. Haunted, fragile and beautiful, this is music that explores the ghostly zones of its own creation. The loneliness and vulnerability that unfolds with the opening cut Stay lays the way for exploration of sound and song as simple melodic guitar and organ whilst the subsequent and subsequent Janet’s Song weaves these elements alongside the sound pebbles entering a water. 

This is evocative music made thoroughly by humans with the most basic of tools. Unafraid to step away from their screens Maths Balance Volumes stroll with breezy resistance to the current thread of platform regurgitation. 

Tonight flips the song on its side as a barnstorming melange of concrete hustle made from shakers, animals, humans and beelzebub knows what. Egyptian Wedding sounds like Still House Plants if they operated off the depths of a rotating well. Forming a round is a dusty scratchy heartbreaker that encapsulates the hybrid Smithsonian Folkways label approach that only MBV do. 

There is something enormously human about Maths Balance Volumes take on underground experimental music, one far more so than the human pitched music made in the mainstream today. In the 20th Century it was the other way around. What has happened ? I will let you contemplate that. But for me, in this case explicitly this press scribe is chuffed at the consequence of this reversal. Very happy indeed.

A grave and sprawling epic, Mt. Fuyu’s A Mirror to Weave swells with implication. Written, recorded, and produced from the heart of a person who’s lived through life’s struggles much too young, the album is a ferment of ideas and experiences that together capture the sheer strangeness, beauty, and terror of existence. Born in China and immigrating to the United States with his parents in infancy, the Kansas City-based artist—otherwise known as Fu Liu—moved from the coastal province of Shandong to America’s Midwest in the early 2000s. The dot-com crash to follow led to living precariously with his father in Canada, then a short stint in foster care, before settling into a strict regimen of academic and musical pursuits on the family’s return to the US.

This classical jazz education and scholarly background comes through in A Mirror to Weave, where an endless inventory of influences—crossing Coil, The Caretaker, Burial; Mark Fisher, Hito Steyerl, Carl Jung, and more—is steeped in a sublime brew of drone, post-industrial and ambient; hauntology, dub and bass. Rife with the trauma of the past, and the expansive landscapes of the present, opener “Temple” billows with decayed, distended, and eerily pitched vocals, as an arrhythmic pulse grows then crashes in a surge of noise and distortion. The disturbance rumbles through other tracks too, as the subaqueous current of “Swamp Nymphs” roils and fizzes around a crumble of pads and sine waves, while resampled and effects-laden drums charge head-first into the spooky atmospherics of “Ovre” with an erratic urgency.

Although often muted, muffled or restrained, the voice and its whispered words play a central role in A Mirror to Weave. It’s in the existential drift of “Shells”, as Fu Liu’s sweetly sung words (“seen it all/ a black hole”) ripple over a melancholy piano solo; environmental field recordings fluttering delicately just beneath the surface. The audio is taken from the parks, streets, bars, as well as online spaces Fu Liu inhabits, giving the record its heavy sense of grief and alienation. Wandering through the emotional state of pandemic-era estrangement, while also mourning the passing of friends, A Mirror to Weave is a requiem for the worst that’s already been, and an exaltation of the best that’s yet to come.

"D.P. Elements is a collection of tracks originally conceived of as the follow up record to my LP Esstends-Esstends-Esstends. At the time I was producing this work I was completely obsessed with sound synthesis and was reveling in the materiality of sound as sound. I was spending hours listening to how different sounds reacted to one another as they rubbed up against each other.

I was living in a sort of shack on an artists colony in upstate NY. My little studio had no sound proofing and so everything I was working on would drift up to the main road that ran through the colony. Donald Fagen lived up that road and he would take walks past the shack. I'd see him walking by and think "hmm - I wonder what Donald thinks of this?"

Although these tracks are only now seeing the light of day as a whole (that is, as they were intended to be heard), over the years small fragments of this material has found its way into other projects of mine, including the Damaged Particulates LP released on Shelter Press in 2016 and Feel Anything, the duo record I made with Marina Rosenfeld that was released on iDEAL in 2018.
