Patti and Lisa explore the question, "Who should I be, and how am I supposed to act?" as they discuss the importance of bringing your true self to leadership. Lisa shares a personal story about being told to "fit in" by choosing a specific industry, which stifled her search for real purpose. Together, they emphasize the value of using assessments as clues—not definitions—to better understand yourself. They discuss the power of quiet observation and the importance of not rushing to "fix" everything, but rather learning to notice what brings you joy. This conversation is a reminder to embrace your uniqueness, stay curious, and lead with genuineness.

Episode 2 Knowing Yourself

In this episode, we delve into what defines genuine leadership, examining how a leader’s attitude and actions serve as both an advocate and a role model for their team. We explore the challenges of transitioning from peer to leader, the responsibility of showing up with purpose, and the importance of building trust. Through personal stories and experiences, we highlight how self-awareness, mentorship, and supporting team strengths cultivate a cohesive and motivated team dynamic. Episode 3: The Advocate

Welcome to the second Professional Pods Program (WP3) podcast! In this podcast, Dr. Jeannette Wolfe interviews Dr. Karen Salomon, a rheumatologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School. This Podweek’s topic is twofold: 1) how to create and/or hone a powerful personal narrative that describes one’s professional role and deep interests, and 2) how to use that narrative, along with other networking tips, to leverage attendance at a high-level conference to enhance career growth.

Why are elevator pitches essential for professionals? Because having a well-rehearsed and easily tailored introductory statement that describes one’s area of expertise and passion can accelerate understanding, connection, and potential future collaboration with new acquaintances. As new opportunities often start with a relatively brief encounter, having an elevator pitch ready and being cognizant of where it might be utilized is an essential professional tool.

To create a great elevator pitch, start with the “why” behind your chosen line of work and the motivation driving that work. In addition, having a story that underscores the work’s value can enhance the pitch’s effectiveness. Once a strong professional narrative is created, recognize where and how it should be tailored to best resonate with different audiences.

New professional opportunities can result from connections made at high-level conferences. Dr. Salomon offered several suggestions to help listeners leverage conference attendance to optimize their professional development. These include going into the meeting with a growth mindset, having an intentional plan (e.g., earmarking times for specific lectures or interest groups), and being on the lookout for spontaneous opportunities to make new connections. In addition, Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Salomon discussed ways to help more junior colleagues increase their own networks by facilitating introductions and including them in casual gatherings.
