Excerpts from four-track (two stereo tracks) mixes of sounds recorded on the 73-75.com Homebuilt Serge: self-playing unattended patches recorded straight to disk, no external controllers/sequencers, no outboard effects apart from some EQ from a Soundcraft Notepad 124. Recorded in March-May 2020, four-track mixes assembled in May 2020.

Low Crows

ANE introduces Bristol based newcomer Rob Winstone, who enters the fold with 6 electroacoustic vignettes awash with frosty crackle and plaintive timbres in the form of ‘UG 18-21’. A collection born through a process of organising old hard drives, discarded tapes, and compositions. Unresolved abstractions and memories flicker through the haze of Winstone’s work which conjures a distinctly British gloom. 

Concrete smears of noise and grit are prominent throughout, at first as just a whisper on opener ‘Untitled Ghost 1’ but the cracks begin to show at an alarming pace. ‘Untitled Ghost 6’ enters with a malleable hiss giving presence to Winstone’s reflections. ‘Flowers Of Decay’ has a corrupted, hymnal quality whilst “Untitled Ghost 3’ haunts searingly with piercing sonic manipulation. A hypnagogic piano riff flutters along another cold, fizzing noise bed on ‘Untitled Ghost 7’ offering a hopeful potential until the mist descends on the closing track. ‘My Eyes Are Wide Open And I Will Never Sleep Again’ dials up the power ambient to a grand scale to see out the collection in a string-laden crescendo.
