What’s in a sample?

After our first album, where we casually sampled records we liked, we were happy with the results, but felt we needed to push ourselves to create clearer boundaries between our own music and the material we referenced from others.

We a drew line in the sand and split out, Casino Edits and Casino Times. Edits for samples, CT for original music.

The music we released on the Edits, we dug deep to find killer loops and build our vibe on top. Whereas original CT music became more explorative, bringing concepts and themes, something we felt our musics really lacked before the album.

But, let’s be honest… It’s all bullshit.

Even though we felt like we needed to prove ourselves musically, some of the best songs we made before this mixed elements of our own music and how we interpreted other people’s.

Sampling has always sat in a grey area, and while there’s undeniably some questionable use of original material, putting boundaries up is only going to act as a creativity killer.

Anyway, this was ten years ago. We’ve had a more carefree approach recently, and with that are happy to present to you Autres, a collision of us and our influences.

A well-known break, a sample from an old French record, a sub bass and some chords.

We almost missed this one. So to ensure ‘In Waves’ made waves in the pages of Mixmag, we went back to it – and boy will you be glad you did, too. Lord Of The Isles, aka producer and graphic designer Neil McDonald, has been writing and producing for almost a decade, the enigmatic releases finding homes on key electronic imprints like Permanent Vacation, Phonica and Mule Music. His debut album, released via LA label ESP Institute, is fresh and spectacular. McDonald says an early fascination with Scottish history inspired his moniker, as well as being dragged around the Highlands by his parents as a young child. Those trips clearly made an impact on him, because ‘In Waves’ is laced with beautiful chord progressions and colours as bright as tartan. He seems to be as in touch with nature as he is with percussion and quirky melodies, as demonstrated by the sound of waves washing over pianos on the title track. Its 15 tracks are the epitome of otherworldly electronic sophistication and yes, for the most part they’re as Balearic as a classic DJ Harvey disco re-edit. Certain tracks stick out: the glitchy Balearic bounce of ‘Liobasta’ is an early highlight, as is the smooth cinematic touch of ‘Obar Lìobhaite’. The Âme/Dixon-ish bleep masterclass ‘Weh-In’ doesn’t put a foot wrong over eight scorched minutes, either, while the subtly breathtaking ‘Yanomami’ isn’t far behind. 2020 could be – no: must be the year of breakthrough for Joris Feiertag. The graduated musician and producer from Utrecht releases music regularly under the moniker of «Feiertag» since 2015. This year though his output will be increased massively. He released the EP «Severance» in January on Sonar Kollektiv and set the bar high for pop music that works in clubs just as well as at home. Already in September a second EP by the name of «Heal» will come out. But Joris Feiertag doesn’t want to keep us waiting until then just like that. 

At the end of March he released «Seasons» (featuring the vocals of Oli Hannaford). And with «Solve» we have now another song that will sweeten our spring. The quite cool and laid-back track is actually as invigorating as only the month of May can be. «Solve» has to be located somewhere between instrumental hiphop, chillwave and downtempo house. In plain English: uncategorizably damn good. Or put into other words: a track to whistle along to.
