A few years ago, leads Edo Van Breemen and Zachary Gray got a gig playing members of a fictional band in the cult vampire thriller hit Afflicted. Given the constraints of the film’s indie budget, there wasn’t enough money to rent a sound-stage and hire actors for their concert scenes, so the producers worked some black magic and booked the band to play some legit gigs on their made-up European tour, shooting the scenes guerrilla-style with real crowds, the music improvised on the spot.

While playing one of these weirdly verité shows in a Parisian nightclub, Gray and Van Breemen realized that they might be on to something. So when they returned to their respective home bases in Brooklyn and Vancouver, they began to piece together their self-titled debut EP, a cross-continental correspondence that mixes the two’s seemingly disparate styles into a spooky, loopy, chorused-out post-cinematic groove.

It’s funny how all the demos we’ve accumulated can change over time ... Sometimes the early versions & rough mixes that stick out the most now didn’t when we were making them, as is the case with ‘Habits’. 

We originally bounced this mix when we were still working on overdubs, but then we lost the project file after Chris spilled a bunch of coffee on his laptop.  We rediscovered this version while sifting through demos one night at our house a couple months later.

If we could reopen that file, I’m sure we’d find some shitty preset sounds, a guitar amp simulator on the vocal track, and tons of crude, approximate EQ and compression.   If we still had the Logic file, we'd probably want to change and rerecord a bunch of stuff.  In a way we’re thankful that this particular track is frozen in time, because if we had a chance to dive back into it, I’m not sure we’d be able to get into the right headspace to improve on it.  

After the coffee spill we started backing up all our files to de cloud, and we'll probably continue to exhaustively revise our current projects, but just this once it’s kinda nice to release something we never got the chance to split hairs over. 

“Habits" is the first song we’ve released where Chris (keyboard + guitar) sings lead vocals.  It's the first song off Loosies, a collection of demo versions & B-sides from the sessions for the Baby Blue Suede EP that came out last year.  Loosies is out 2/16, along with a deluxe cassette from Invertebrate Music.
