“The Agonized Mistake"

Spawned from the mixture of a malignant fungus strain and ample pounds of human flesh, this homunculus-like creature originates from a time long past when alchemists using Second Pandora dark arts sought to create life. In the end, all they created were beings that live in constant, ceaseless agony, as their very physical forms torture their artificial souls.

Agonized Mistakes usually dwell within the underground containment facilities they were sent to rot eternally in by their alchemist creators. Their wails and moans echo through the halls of these buildings, a constant echo of the needless pain they’ve been put through.

Although blind, they tend to lash out at the presence of another being in the midst of their misery. Due to the fungus that gives them life, their touch is incredibly dangerous, and an attack from these despairing beings can corrode your flesh within seconds. They are, however, rather slow and lumbering due to the pain they are in.

There is no known way to kill an Agonized Mistake, and they seemingly live forever. If only they wouldn’t lash out, we could potentially find a way to put them out of their misery, but alas, they are too broken to listen to reason. All that can be done is to keep them sequestered in these prisons so that they harm no one.

Taking influence from the soundtracks of psychological horror games like Silent Hill, “Effigy” is probably one of the weirdest songs I’ve made. The breathy groans that lead the drops are underpinned by one of my most effective melodies, it’s whimsical yet unnerving and creates an oppressive, uncertain atmosphere that never quite resolves. The slow pace serves this style of trap so well, allowing time for the odd sound design and uneasy pace to seep in and drag you along.

“The Artist of the Self”

Humans driven mad by the fanatical appreciation of their species’ own form (an ailment originating from humanity’s narcissism as a result of both the First and Second Pandoras) will become driven to make elegant clothing from the skin of their fellow kin. At this point, they are beyond their own origin as humans, mutating new organs designed to process consumed flesh into thread.

Artists of the Self operate in secret throughout cities, kidnapping people under cover of night to be slaughtered for their twisted fashion. They often raid morgues, mausoleums, and graveyards for freshly deceased cadavers if live sources are lacking in a given area, however, they tend to favour the skin of the deceased much less.

They are also known to form underground societies, sharing their quilts and clothing amongst each other and naming pieces after their victims to “immortalize” them. Some will bring living hostages to be turned into clothes as a collaborative effort at their gatherings.

If you see a high number of disappearances in your area, it may be wise to alert local authorities. While they may be mutants, they are still bound by humanity’s physical follies and can be dispatched by professionals with weapons. If you find yourself face-to-face with them, do not underestimate their danger despite what was previously said about their mortality. They can throw their needles at you before you even have time to think.

“Skin Quilt” originated from that core organ motif, and it transformed into one of the most bizarre brostep tracks I’ve ever made. It’s an interesting mix, profoundly grim and unnerving while being by far the quirkiest song on the project… in a sense, somewhat of a microcosm of my music as a whole. Taking such a harrowing song concept yet infusing it with a bunch of off-the-wall dubstep energy, although the organ and accordion are there to remind you of the darkness.

“The Ever-Spawning”

This massive insect was once alive, a relatively harmless fruit-eating creature. However, due to Pandora influence, its eggs have become cursed, and after dying in the process of attempting to lay them, it has become one giant cocoon for its now stunted spawn. The rot and decay of its corpse begin to drive its young frenzied with a hunger for flesh. Eventually, the corpse explodes into a storm of dangerous flies, ready to ravage anything in their path.

This corruption of the species’ eggs is leading to the near extinction of the Ever-Spawning. They used to be known as “The Giant Fruiteater”, but this harmless being has become a dangerous origin point. As the flies they spawn will eventually grow large themselves, “The Giant Maneater” all but replacing their peaceful ancestor is a very real threat.

In this interim where Giant Fruiteaters are becoming Ever-Spawning, there have been many attempts at a solution. Some have settled with trying to exterminate them all before they can spawn, which would certainly protect us but would be a true shame to let the species go extinct. We have attempted to foster Giant Fruiteaters and ensure they are not corrupted but to mixed results.

The young of the Ever-Spawning rain over settlements like a cloud, stripping skin from bones on any human unlucky enough to be in their way in a matter of seconds. No town or city has survived such an attack to date, and while flame-based weaponry staves them off, the swarm is often too much to keep up with.

With buzzing insect sounds included in the song and dour, mournful melodies, “Broodmother” has a certain hazy miasma to it that is difficult to put into words. It’s the heaviest song in the collection, one of the heaviest I’ve made, but it still has upbeat character, a reminder that even though a dense fog of flies and rot there’s still light out there. The buzzing, neuro-like basses are a really big point of pride for me, it’s sinuous and scratchy in equal measure. Proper disgusting too, which fits well.

“The Grim Entertainers”

Comedy and tragedy personified, these playful spirits haunt theatres across the world and embody the history of plays and performances over the centuries of human existence. Known to induce hallucinations of fantastical events, they seek more souls to join them in their endless world of fantasy, even if it means using those hallucinogenic powers to cause poor humans to end their lives in a stupor.

Affixed to the past, the world known as the “dramatic plane” is a non-stop theatre production, and in dire need of more cast. It is technically a form of pocket dimension, however, one that alters real locations into magical environments. It is said that approaching a theatre or stage at night is usually when the Grim Entertainers bring you into their world, showing you elaborate visions to convince you to cut your life short and join them.

Commonly, this involves making their victim act out the closing deaths of Romeo and Juliet, and after dying the Grim Entertainers bring the human soul to their world. In our understanding of what existence is like after being taken away, it is a senseless reality of extreme happiness and heartbreak in all moments, akin to a theatrical Pandemonium.

Many exorcists have attempted to remove Grim Entertainers from the places in which they inhabit but none have succeeded, as it seems they do not necessarily reside in these places but watch them for humans. Simply avoid areas of performance at night while alone, and you should be safe.

I’d liken “Shadow Play” to a theatrical performance, just one that happens to be haunted. The song has a rustic, ancient feeling to it that implies years of dust, contrasted by the surreal synth leads and tonal basses evoking something supernatural still present. Despite the slower pace, I feel there’s a great sense of playfulness to it… it’s cryptic yet entrancing like being put under hypnosis by a malevolent spirit, echoing laughter and screams at the edges of your mind.

It has been a while for sure, i was kinda bored and had nothing much to do, so i originally just wanted to make a random riddim thing (idk if anyone else does this but just making random riddim tracks with no purpose is kinda fun) and then i remembered jotdown is a thing!

I’m so happy with how this song turned out, we made it in 3 days, and it’s been so fun, and a learning experience.

I don’t feel like I’ve resonated with a song so much as this in a long time. It’s all about becoming  not afraid to share your voice in your music, which is something I’ve struggled with personally, but only recently got the courage to do recently. 

Thank you Justin for doing this with me, it’s different from anything we ever have or plan to make, but it’s us, and we can be proud 🩵
