From Sweden with Italo to Dresden with love. Stockholm's @djdjcity drops his first release on Dresden's Uncanny Valley with the COSMICOMICS EP, a 100% fun record for all the senses, deeply inspired by Italo Calvino's iconic short story collection.

COSMICOMICS borrows its name from a collection of short stories written by Italian author Italo Calvino, first published in Italian in 1965. The stories have inspired DJ City to a record that aesthetically draws from 80s Italo Disco and 70s science fiction films. In the book, each story is based on a scientific fact about the world and the cosmos whilst using fiction to ask how we understand it. Where Calvino's stories are comical and absurd, DJ City surrenders to the sublime and romantic and moves further into the metaphysical world that Calvino created to come up with three energetic and melodic tracks bursting heavily with fantasy and drama. Deeply rooted in dance music’s history, they shine with Hi-NRG-vibes, strict dancefloor commitment and little easter eggs like that Drexciya-reference in COSMICOMICS.

The cover of the record is a painting from 2020 by Swedish artist Jens Fänge called THE INN. We see a man in front of the entrance to a Mediterranean-style building and a woman in a window on the upper floor. The picture seems to have been broken up into several dimensions, and abstract details make it difficult for the viewer to know exactly what and when the scene is taking place. When shown in Shanghai, the painting was censored by government agents and had to be taken down. A testament to the power of the image. Perhaps it shows our main character, perhaps it shows us the author or the artist. Depending on who listens, who reads and who looks, a multitude of universes open.

@credit00ratlife is still doing his thing with PUT THE FUNK BACK IN 2 TECHNO, saving you from the horrors of today’s life with a bunch of stirring tracks to dance against oppression. On his seventh EP for Uncanny Valley the Leipzig based funkster finds solace in his craft, doing what he does best. And that is to make dance music that is both undeniably catchy and blessed with an ever-surprising range of ideas and styles.

What all the tracks have in common is that they have been written by someone who is deeply committed to the roots of dance music. On top of that, he has the enviable ability to find titles that already give you a hunch of sound and message of the tracks, even before you listen to them. Be it the title track with its wild Detroit rhythms and piano sound bits or the closer YOU NEED 2 CHILL, a still highly danceable ode to 90s chill out floors. While the stomping BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT gets use of Credit 00’s own voice, the chords heavy CHURCH FOR THE RENEGADES is a perfect example of inventive use of vocal samples.

All in all, it’s music you pretty much can’t help but love. Also, don’t miss a closer look at the front and back cover, which are full of references and iconographies from the history of dance music. In typical Credit 00 style, it’s a super entertaining way for the artist to give credit to a lot of his influences.

There we go again. Finally, Cuthead returns with the long awaited follow-up to his “Brother EP”. His new record “Everlasting Sunday” surely fulfils some dreams as it is packed with no less than nine tracks. Three catchy House tunes on the A-Side and six Hip-Hop-jams on the B-side make for a very extended EP or a mini-album ... the choice is up to you!
Right at the beginning we start with the sample-heavy “Maputo Jam”, a tune in classical Cuthead-manner with its irresistible drumming full of stumbling blocks and layers of sweet synth-melodies. “Nautic Walking” is a straighter House track with a guitar line and clapping samples but that bass line quickly reminds you whom you’re listening to. “Minerals” starts off pretty deeply before evolving from a jazzy House affair into an almost orchestral tune with opulent strings.
The flipside is an extensive expression of Cuthead’s inexhaustible love for Hip-Hop. There is feel-good material like “Everlasting Sunday” and “Deep Shadows” as well as banging joints like “Calculator Watch” with all the typical Cuthead-trademarks: sick bass work, stammering drumming and imaginative sampling.

After all, the no-nonsense Techno track "Gaze" winds its way through brain twists that you haven't even known before.

Alone Together (Together)

Albert van Abbe has tied up a Gesamtkunstwerk for his first record on shtum. The timelessly designed techno tracks are wrapped into wonderful artwork by the Dutchman himself, the track titles of avantgarde poet Daan Mol and a piece of short fiction by Swedish author Björn Jumme, accompany the music perfectly.

A field of red lips. Swaying, swelling, seeping. Harsh sounds fall from the sky and perish in the thick undergrowth. Fragrant, glistening nectar exiting the red mouths, dripping smoothly down on the leaves below. The earth quivers. Soon they’ll be gone, the red lips. Whispers of death in the cool morning breeze. This is what excites them so. Red soil, blood and ash. Fearless bees buzzing with life drink greedily and are rewarded with silence. The sound of translucent wings losing momentum; minuscule sawtooth waves morphing into sines. The red field listens with hunger.

Fourteen years of Uncanny Valley - fourteen years of resisting the predictable, the neatly packaged crap that keeps electronic music stuck in a loop. Dresden's bastard child of a label has survived, thrived and kept its teeth by refusing to be just another name in the endless mess of club culture.

And now Carl Suspect, co-label boss and sonic agitator, is opening up the archive and piecing together something raw, urgent and unfiltered. “14 Years of Uncanny Valley” is a journey through the dark corridors of house, jazz-funk, Italo, ambient and techno - an uncompromising, sweaty ride that feels less like a retrospective and more like a battle cry. Dancers have to train hard and perform with a rough edge, conveying emotions with as much acting ease as possible. At the end it also requires choreography, clothing, lighting and the appropriate set with lots of helping hands. The bigger the show, the more people are involved. With a few exceptions, it also needs sound, rhythm or just a appropriate soundscape. Sometimes existing music is used because it is structurally well suited to the piece. Other times, working with composers and musicians is the best way to put your own stamp on the piece bringing things to the point.
 
@sandrow_m has been working with choreographers and dance piece makers for several years. With this compilation he presents 20 different pieces of music that were either used because of their suitability or were created. There is no attempt to present the entire spectrum, which would not be possible in 90 minutes anyway. Nevertheless the compilation contains various styles, for which, with a little patience, you can try to find corresponding film material on the Internet to complete your listening experience.

the Pattern” he relies heavily on the good old Boom Tschak-paradigm of Electro, without completely giving up his trademark sound.

Number Eleven on Uncanny Valley focuses on the soundscapes of CVBox who debuted on our fourth compilation in 2011. Releasing his first solo record, he's finally able to express his very specific idea of sound somewhere in between meditative Ambient and compelling Techno on the “Analog Amputations EP”.

“Past the Eclipse” is shaped by echoing choirs at first and mutates then into a serious Detroit Funk killer for self forgotten Techno dancefloors. “Counterflow” starts to roll with menacing drones but quickly surprises with its optimistic atmosphere and an irresistibly catchy synth flute.

The flipside starts off forcefully with the oldschool Techno stomper “Droid Swift 836”. After that “Orience” floats in a sea of pads without losing the Funk of the CVBoxes.

Two years ago Credit 00 was lucky enough to find a flat with a winter garden in the midst of the city's concrete vastness. Setting up his studio there, surrounded by plants, facing the backyard oasis with its trees, bushes and birds singing all day was quite the opposite of his usual work environment. 

The contrast of being in nature whilst surrounded by an urban neighbourhood is explored on Credit 00's latest outing on Uncanny Valley. Two different settings represented on either side of the vinyl record. 

The street side of the building is Credit 00's typical habitat: rough drums, face melting acid and ghetto style track arrangement. R U READY 2 JACK pays tribute to Belgium New Beat and wants to sound like Hardcore that is coming from the heart. TRUE 2 THE GEHM is an ode to one of the true German Acid innovators, Andreas Gehm (R.I.P.), originally written in 2016 for a compilation, which raised money to help him cover expenses incurred due to his severe health issues. 

The backyard side reveals the influence of flora and fauna on Credit 00's work. On both THE GARDEN and DEEP IN THE JUNGLE, you can hear his synthetic interpretation of mother nature's repertoire. Birds chirping, acid frogs croaking and the wind blowing through the trees to the sound of jungle drums. 

Despite all the differences between the concrete and the green jungle, there are also a lot of similarities. As the artwork (hand-drawn by Credit 00 himself) illustrates, graffiti spreads all over buildings like wild vine grows on rocks: chaos reigns everywhere, whether in natural or man-made environments!

Who’s next, please? It’s Sandrow M. who was introduced with “The Three Trees” on UV010. Finally, he arrives with his solo debut for the Dresden based label. and it ended up being a hell of a record full of diversity.
Everything starts with the edgy beats of “Prayervan” that are quickly flattered by one of those catchy melodies typical for Sandrow’s synths play. This is great Pop music, even more when Sandrow M starts to sing. “Facerunner” however, is a club tune with its ever rising beats that are accompanied by a superb synth pad.
The flipside starts with the catchy anthem “Gonna Make”. You cannot defend yourself against this sample which will stick in your head for a long time. And once again it’s his synth work that makes the difference. Not to mention the funky solo. “Schnaubi” rounds things up in a more unpolished way with its stuttering drum work. But here again this is refined by those irresistible harmonies out of Sandrow M’s keys.

Another (more or less) round catalogue number, another Various Artists EP on Uncanny Valley: This time it’s a full package with four true club bangers (at least to our ears...).

On the A-side we have the heart warming label debut of the Polish producer Eltron John. He contributes his remix for “Varsovie” (French for Warsaw) by Brodka who is a decent Pop star in Poland. The remix came into being when Eltron John took part in a Red Bull Music Academy event in Warsaw. Brodka was collaborating with Red Bull on a series of open airs shows at that time. So, one thing led to another and the result is an irresistible catchy tune that also features Eltron John’s very own voice over Brodka’s vocal line.
Another addictive track is Sandrow M’s remix for “Falling Off” by Alex Ketzer from Cologne. Alex Ketzer approached Uncanny Valley for his book project about his favourite labels. While doing this, he sent a copy of his “Falling Off”-EP on good old cassette format. Sandrow couldn’t resist and created a wonderful remix that still keeps to the atmosphere of the original but makes things a little bit more danceable with its punchy drumming in typical Sandrow M- style.

On the flipside there is Cuthead’s overdue return to the label. The whipping acid line and synth chords along with the rough drumming turn “Splenda Daddy” into a real floor bomb. Don’t forget to do things wrong from time to time. Finally Jacob Stoy’s “Inspektor” rides on a pulsating bass and those sweet bells until great strings bring things to a peaceful end.

Starting as a label that served basically as a platform for their friends’ music in 2010, Uncanny Valley evolved into a record label that assembles acclaimed artists from the electronic music scene not only from the label’s base in Dresden but also from Germany and beyond. With a strong emphasis on the records’ artwork the label heads Philipp Demankowski, Conrad Kaden and Carl-Johannes Schulze are constantly on a mission to establish and refine the artists from the roster as well as to search for new talents. Artists as Jacob Korn, Cuthead, Credit 00, Massimiliano Pagliara, CVBox or Panthera Krause all feel at home on the label, giving them the chance to develop projects that are not only music related but can also integrate different art forms. With the two offshoots Rat Life and shtum under its belt, Uncanny Valley does not stand still to explore the full spectrum of electronic and not so electronic music from House via Disco, Hip-Hop or Ambient through to Techno. A range that can also be depicted when the three label heads come together for a DJ set as Uncanny Valley DJs.
