Have we been? It’s a question asked and answered every hundred years, and although contemporary technologies have gotten us into this dark age, I predict we’ll stay there for a while; an emergent generation forged from the insights of AIs rather than imposed human ones. The Io-propagators hope we’ll be part of it, witness to its unfolding.
Autonomous and autonomous systems enter this unfolding, they have the potential to become much more complex and persistent. They can become much more integrated with our world, able to be personalized and re-configured to fit the world. This is an interesting and potentially explosive future where many separate entities will be optimized for their own purposes.
We think security is important. We think that high-tech weapons systems must be expensive to maintain. We think that AQ processes such as breakthrough, are dangerous. We think that breakthroughs are dangerous and that anti-AIs are an existential threat to civilization. We think that human-level AI might be inevitable, and that strengthening the stakes by introducing the robot within our own borders is a wise use of resources. We think that democracy, especially the rule of law, is a good thing, and that capitalism (or whatever utopia under which this utopian vision will be enshrined is a good thing. We think that individual freedom is a good thing, and that communism (if it survives) is a bad thing.
We think that old hierarchies, especially the most venerable, such as those of serfdom, are long extinct, and that new hierarchies are long extinct.
We think that new hierarchies evolve naturally, are replaced by new ones, and that the natural horizon of life is to be spread outward into the cosmos.
In short, we think that the future of intelligence may be in the hands of ever smarter machines, not in the human minds of today’s humans.
