As a thriving bass music culture continues to permeate deeper into various hotspots both East and West, we accept that not every release we put out on Unchained will strike the same resonant chord as a 2-step D’n’B foghorn ode to Valhalla.

Given our heritage, our crew will always love a good dirty roller and that nostalgic rush of Drum and Bass burning in our veins. However, we admit we are still slaves to sonics that are divergent from the norm. No apologies!

Enter our next chapter in the ever-evolving story that is Unchained.

Hailing from St Petersburg, Evgenii Khmel’s music has not only magnetised labels such as Metalheadz, Sofa Sound and Dispatch via his Black Barrel alias, he has also drawn attention more recently with his second incarnation “Leo Cap.” Under this moniker, his cathartic 140+ output has been championed in spades by the likes of Deep, Dark and Dangerous, and Jack Sparrow’s Navy Cut, to name a few.

We had Evgenii play at one of our gigs at Oil Club, Shenzhen China, back in 2019. Not only did he turn heads ecstatic with his own brand of punch drunk rhythm, but a bond was formed with our crew. A bond that has lasted the years, beyond the pandemic, as the crew moves out across the globe: from Hong Kong to Sydney, Shenzhen to Beijing and further out, to London and Mumbai.

His latest Groove Masta EP on Unchained is diabolical, formidable, mind-altering, twisted, wonky and intelligent. At first glance, one could imagine the territory covered here spans 160, halftime and dubstep, however we feel it comes from another plane not yet imagined. A fresh universe that converges with our own in a dark club with a large stack of subs, and where the curiosity door is unlocked.

Each tune comes properly packed, carrying its own weapon, whilst every vibration is soaked in blitzkrieg meditation. Just listen and let go.

The Belgian producer kicks off his year with a release on the equally impressive and underrated Too Much Collective. Following a heavyweight project from Jamzigg in November and a track from n/less, the label continues to give a platform to those looking to rise the ranks of the genre and 7Kidz grabs the bull by the horns with this one by producing a killer no skips EP. However out of the four tracks on TMC012, 'Dirty Job' particularly hits the spot for me, which is why I have the pleasure of presenting it in full today!
