Episode 36 speaking to Jim Coles aka Om Unit who's a producer and DJ based in Bristol, England. He's produced records spanning multiple genres for the likes of Goldie's Metalheadz, Mike Paradinas Planet Mu and D-Bridges' Exit records - and has DJed the world extensively. He's also part of Dream Continuum and produces under the alias Phillip D Kick.  

Jim also started out as a turntablist and also worked in community music in his early days. He teaches Music Production at BIMM in Bristol and recently released a new album entitled Acid Dub Studies. We caught up in March to discuss his career, diversity in the industry and tips for making sub heavy music.

Emerging on the Australian circuit in 2014, Kufa quickly evolved from a teenage Footwork connoisseur into a recognisable industry presence encompassing many aspects of the rich and diverse music scene in the Oceanic region, DJing regularly across the east-coastʼs main venues supporting countless major figures in electronic music and otherwise, making up one third of the premier bass music touring entity for the region “Whatever Agency”, managing a grip of rising Australian talents, promoting full-time and contributing to the long running label/radio crew Blend Corp on PBS 106.7FM (which led to a chance meeting and consequently a 5hr b2b set between Kufa and Unchained co-founder Lyndon Jarr during an Australian tour). 

Moving into 2021, Kufa continues to hone their distinctive genre-dismissing mixing style (expressing itself here with inclusion of hip-hop, neo-soul and dub reggae in the 60 mins as well as tracks from Unchained artists including Sinistarr), preparing for his official label debut with Uncomfortable Beats on July 14th with the collaborative project “Kufacat” alongside trap juggernaut Slo:Waveʼs secret weapon Liddicat, forthcoming productions for a handful of US based hip-hop artists and the launch of Kufaʼs own label (details coming soon) - in other words, stay locked...
