Life in Lockdown
The words rained down from up above us,
So many words that we drowned.
I lost my first job, and then the other.
There ain’t no work in this town.

The streets were empty, must be like heaven.
Wild turkeys take back the street.
The bugs are happy; they ate my family.
You know that I can’t compete.

I know the Black Plague, I studied history.
I know that death ain't a crime.
I read the Bible, I read Misery.
I sit here biden my time.

Here, let me show you my sourdough starter.
I even cut my own hair.
These talking heads they fill up my screen, and
I’m sitting mute in my chair.

Amazon books, Amazon groceries,  
I got my Tiffany’s mask.
You want a cocktail? It’s five o’clock somewhere.
I never thought you would ask.

I grew some thyme, but ran out of time.  
I learned to sharpen my knife.
This thing gets you coughing, end in a coffin.
Maybe I’m wasting my life?

Went for a walk, now I might be dirty;
I guess I’ll take off my clothes.
I saw some people out there: Nobody has a mouth,
And all their eyes are closed

I know the Black Plague, I studied history,
I know that death ain't a crime.
I burned the calendars, I threw all the clocks
But that won’t make the time fly.

Too many patients, no time for Patience;
We got to take back the streets.
Too much surveillance, too much complacence.
You know that I can’t compete.

Can’t get to CHOP now, or to Kentucky:
Nobody taking the train.
Can’t get to City Hall, or Minneapolis,
But who am I to complain?

Nobody quiet, nobody sleeping;
The city’s coming alive.
We lit the fireworks, 
the revolution flared up like blood in the sky.

This ain’t the Black Plague, we’re living history.
They’re making Living a Crime.
I write in my journal, make masterpieces,
What do I do with this time?

We left the city, went to the country.
My uncle got a great place.
We grow tomatoes, air dry the laundry.
Don’t have to cover my face.

Said stay in school – but there ain’t no school!
No time to wrinkle my brain.
We got the fields and we got each other.
We run unmasked in the rain.

Was it a dream or was it a nightmare?
Can’t tell the night from the day.
I’m going blind now, no twenty-twenty,
Can’t even hear what I say.

Is the world over, or just beginning?   
It was a pretty good show!
I said goodbye to my friends and Family,
But I had nowhere to go.
