‘I Write’ is the first single from Surrey native Luke Barham aka Uncle Luc. The songs from his debut album were conceived in a Hollywood garage over the Christmas period and hark back to a time when pop music was grand, something he likes to call “baroque and roll” On returning to the UK, Luke met Finnish producer Henri Växby  whose family one by one joined the recording sessions eventually becoming his backing band. Taking hints from Surrey hometown hero Nick Lowe, his songs are loaded with rich melody and vivid story telling.

His debut album ‘HUMBLEBRAG’ produced by Finnish writer Henri Vaxby and mixed by James Kenosha (Dry the River, Rhodes) follows soon after on 22.09.14

Luke has speedily built a reputation for neatly crafted folk pop since playing his first ever show in March this year. He has since played almost 30 gigs gaining radio support from Dermot O’Leary (BBC Radio 2) Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and John Kennedy (XFM). The songs from his debut album were penned in a darkened Los Angeles garage and later recorded in Brixton owing more to California than South London with a 70’s sunshine jangle and country reflection throughout. 

Uncle Luc will be joined by a host of friends to launch the album with a special headline show at The Islington in London on September 23rd.

Uncle Luc -Christmas 1994

Super Fan 99 Records are pleased to release a brand new mini album from Uncle Luc following hot on the heels of last year’s acclaimed debut. The five new tracks will be available on extremely limited 7” (10 copies!) Echo Park shaped sleeve CD (50 copies!)and digital formats.

The album was recorded at Lolipop Studios in Echo Park, Los Angeles and produced by Iggy Gonzalez of local psych heroes ‘Mystic Braves’ All songs were recorded live to half inch tape and completed within 3 hours with a maximum of 3 takes per song. Luc explains; 

“The idea was to trap the songs while they were as fresh as possible. With digital technology these days it’s very easy to over think and over cook a recording with endless takes and edits. A song can sometimes end up getting a little lost. I wanted to make this set of songs feel as vibrant and alive as possible and that meant getting them recorded with as little messing as possible while they were still fresh. Using old analogue gear was the natural choice to capture the songs in a real light”

The result is a record far more intimate than anything recorded by Luc before.

'Forever a Fan' was written just 2 weeks ago initially intended as a B-side for Bones of the Days but the resulting recording is among Luc's finest and plans were changed to make this a double A-side. Casios meet Banjos on this sweet country bedroom pop track that brings to mind Summer Teeth era Wilco via the Gorillaz.

On the flip is 'Bones of the Days' taken from Uncle Luc’s sophomore album ‘Sticking to the Rules’ It features the pedal steel talents of BJ Cole who is perhaps best known for playing on Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’. Never one to take life too seriously the humorous fact laden video see’s Luc (real name Luke Barham) pick apart the songs lyrical references which dive from CK One fragrance to Dawson’s Creek. The track itself conjures up a UK Stephen Malkmus attempting a straight up Nashville tune. Shot on one sunny afternoon in his hometown of Dorking in Surrey, the video cost just £14.49 to make and features his parents dog ‘Stanley’.

Bones of the Days was produced by Henri Vaxby and mastered at Metropolis by Andy Baldwin (Blur, Oasis, Belle & Sebastian). Catch its digital double A-side release on 10.08.18. Limited download with heart shaped guitar pick, enamel badge and personalised note available direct from Super Fan.
