The idea came from Super Mario Maker. That game has some new music in the style of past Mario games, and one of those new tracks is a theme for fortress levels in Super Mario World, which includes string samples. As you may tell from looking at YouTube videos of people plugging soundfonts into random midis, Super Mario World doesn't have a strings instrument, and I wanted to see if I could recreate the sound of strings in Super Mario World by using strings sounds from MegaMan X. I think it turned out well. I originally was only going to do the intro to this song just for my own amusement, but I haven't had much else to work on in a while, so I decided to finish and release this cover.
Whether or not this is a chiptune is up to your own judgement. The Super Nintendo's soundchip didn't have any built-in synthesizers, but instead has ten channels that can play one sample each, which the option of built-in reverb. I'm working on another SNES "chiptune" that simulates that built-in reverb, but that's for another time. ;)
